coolant flush questions
Hello all, newbie here. The search feature has long time been my friend but it's about time I create a post of my own.
I've never done a coolant flush before, but after searching for tips/advice on the board I think I understand the procedure. I am still unclear about the refilling part. I bought a gallon of the toyota red antifreeze. My quesiton is, is this already premixed? Meaning I just pour it into the radiator and I don't need to mix it with anything else like distilled water right? Some people say you do, some don't. I'm a bit confused.

Really? that's what I was going to flush it with. Maybe I'll skip it this one time and just plain hose water and see how it goes.

Is there an easy way to measure the amount to do 50/50? Do I just pour the toyota red first, then add the rest with water to mix in. Or is there an easier way to mix the proportions? Ahh, sorry for the newb questions.

ya all that stuff gets flushed back into the radiator.... what i did the 2nd time was removed the lower radiator hose took a garden hose and turned it on a little bit and let it run through the thermostat housing for about 15mins then took the hose and let it run through the radiator seem to work

I'm not sure how much the 4runner takes...and i've never filled i up. Ive only added to the radiator and I usually take a bottle, half water and half fluid and pour it in. Since you are doing a full on flush, I would imagine you use the whole bottle? I think mixing it before/after would have the same affect?

You can do what I did, if you are changing out the thermostat, just run cold distilled water a couple of times thru the system with the therm out, I did this about 3 times for about 10 min. each time, until it was just plain water that was draining, put in new therm and put in toyota red 50/50 with distilled water. I'm sure you can do the same without removing the therm.

Does it get very cold or very hot where you live? I reccommend a 60/40 mixture as it disipates heat better...
The way I always "mix" mine is have 2 gallons of antifreeze and 3 gallons of distilled water (use distilled water only), pour the first gallon of h20 and gallon of antifreeze in the radiator. Then fill one of the empty gallons about 1/3-1/2 (60/40 or 50/50) with coolant, and top off with water, add to radiator. Do this until your full. Then premix whatever you have left over and you have premixed additive.
For the flush I always drain the rig out, top it off with the hose.. get it hot.. let it cool down drain it, top it off with the hose and flush, get it hot.. drain it, top it off with hose, get it hot... let it cool.. drain it from radiator and block.. refill.

I just replaced my radiator and what we did was pour half of the gallon in(100% coolant) fill the gallon jug back up with water(50/50) pour all of that mix into the radiator, then filled the jug half way up with water(100% water). that will give you 2 gallons of liquid at 50/50. After i did that i did notice that it wasn't full so i put about another half gallon of 50/50 mixed in the radiator and reserve.
The whole system takes about 2.5 gallons and if you mix it 50/50 you only need 1.25 gallons of coolant.
