Celica 22re into my 4runner. Looking for info.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a bit of info on the early 80's celica 22re's. I'm presently doing a body off frame rebuild of a 1988 4runner, and the engine is full of cappuchino because of the usual timing guide problem. The previous owner included a 22re with the truck when I bought it, and said it ran very well. I'm almost certain it came from a Celica, but I'm not sure what year, think they had 22re's starting in 1982. I posted pics on a recent entry of my build thread HERE. What I'm hoping is someone can help me narrow down what year the engine came from, so I can find out what will be compatible and what won't be. I know a lot of the parts from the earlier 22re's aren't compatible with the 1985 and later ones, but any info you guys have on the subject would be welcome. Does anyone know if I'll have issues hooking up the ecu from my '88 to this truck? Too many questions, too little time.

Feel free to post here, or on my build thread, I'll be checking in on them both. Cheers!

it's an early 22r-e. pre-85. which means a late exhaust manifold wont work. I cannot tell what exact year since I don't know if it has a single or dual row chain. Not even sure if they made a dual row pre-85 22r-e. All I know is those early 22r-e's are somewhat rare.

Thanks for the info, Xtreme.
I've been reading on a bunch of celica sites, and doing searches on 22re's in general, I'm pretty sure the engine is from a 1983 or 84 celica. I think the 1982's had the dual row, and the timing cover on this one looked close to the same depth as the one on my 88, so I'm assuming it's single row. It's too bad the manifold isn't compatible. Otherwise I could have used the stock o2 bung for the ecu, and the manifold o2 sensor for an air/fuel guage from lcengineering, or something. Any clue if hooking it up to my 88's ecu would give me issue? Any clue if my w56 manual tranny will bolt straight on? I'm hoping to use this engine for a while as I rebuild the original one. Or at least that's the dream.

Quote straight from wikipedia on the 22re:
"Toyota swapped the dual row timing chain used in older engines for a single row chain with plastic guides in 1983. This system reduced drag on the engine, but was inherently problematic."
So yeah, unless I'm wrong and mine has a dual row chain, which doesn't look likely, mine's either an '83 or '84 22re. Strange how they had the efi version back in '82 already, but didn't throw them into the 4runner till '85.

Did a bit more research. Apparently the 22re in the Celicas were mated to the W55 transmission. The W56 in my 4runner was based off of the W55, and despite changes in the ratios for 1st and 2nd gear to allow for the heavier trucks to pick up speed, the transmissions should be identical. So that would answer my question as to whether I can bolt my tranny onto it. Still wondering about other issues I might have though, like whether the ecu in my '88 will work fine with the engine.

If you swap all the electronics off the 88 to the older engine it should work fine although the older engines did not have the knock sensor.

I don`t know if that will cause a problem or not.

I have 5 engines out of 1983 Celica`s at least one has the double timing chain well there not rare here any how.

Thanks for the input, Wyoming.
I'm not sure what you mean by swapping all electronics from the 88 over. I was planning on using the wiring harness from the '88, do you mean I need to swap out all the sensors etc. As well?
I'll have to do some research on the knock sensor thing.
I'm sure the rarity depended on how many Celicas actually sold in your area. They may be rare, but I'd doubt they're highly sought after. Everything I've read speaks of how much more efficiently the 85 and after 22re's ran.

I know the older 22r engines were ignition timed different then the newer 22r engines 8 degrees versus 0 for the newer ones. I wonder if the same goes for the 22re's as well?

wyoming9 your real close to me, surprised you have that many early 22re engines. I have yet to see one out here.

i can tell you that the computer for an 88, along with most of the emissions, is unique to that year.

it will be looking for input from later model O2 sensors, sensors that didn't exist in prior years, etc.

why have you chosen to use such an unusual and piece-meal approach on the engine, for a "body-off-frame rebuild"? get one of these!!!

ha just kidding; good luck with your build.

I was sort of into Celicas I have a bunch of them in fact to many it is time to clean house.

Yes you would need all the sensors off the 88 engine or you could go the other way and round up what you need to run the 83 with the ECM coil igniter all those goodies.

As far as engines you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 83 and 85 22rec of about the same mileage with a good tune up

hmmm don't tempt me with taking one of those celica's off your hands. I have been for years wanting to build a hill climb car. lol. I wish I still had my 77 GT.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess i'll be swapping over a bunch of sensors. I have nothing but '88 ecus at my disposal. and yeah it probably does seem piece meal but i'm only planning on throwing the celica engine in so i can drive the truck while i rebuild the engine it came with. I am sure you're correct about not noticing the difference between the 83 and an 85 wyoming.

MUCH OF THAT^^^^ just thinking out loud. DEFINITELY RESEARCH! lol. I just want you to be able to slap it together and NOT tear it down again due to something like 'injectors' or something, ya know?
I'm copying it to this thread in case any of you guys know the particulars behind the injectors etc. between the 1983 (I'm assuming it's an 83) Celica 22re and the 1988 4runner 22re.

Well yes you would have to swap the fuel rail and injector resistor from the 88 engine to me that is part of the electronics as well as the sensors.

I don`t know if you have emissions up there but not having the knock sensor will cause the check engine light to stay on. It is possible to tap a hole in the block and install the knock sensor.

My county is actually the only one I know of in my area that has no emissions testing at all. All i have to do is pass a safety inspection once to get a truck on the road. There are no tests after that.

i dont know exactly what you're looking to do here on injectors, but i can tell you that 88 injectors are unique.

check out this diagram from lcengineering.com which illustrates the difference in injectors comparing 88s to the others:
http://lcengineering.com/TechNotes/?techid=11

this page lists the resistance (which varies) for Types C-F.

i don't know what Type the celica motor would have had, but i doubt highly that it's similar to the 88. good luck, we're all counting on you.

Thanks for all the help/info, guys. I'll be swapping over the components from the '88 engine to the celica engine and trying to make it work with the ecu from the '88. If that doesn't work, I'll finish what I can on the truck, and it'll have to sit while I rebuild the '88 engine. If any of you wanted to continue following along, I'll be probably abandoning this thread and sticking to my build thread from now on. There should be links to different sections of my build thread in my signature. Cheers!
