I was looking into doing the deckplate mod but I couldn't help but think why not just open the top of the airbox instead of drilling a big hole? I don't know if this would work since nobody has said anything about it but I hope that wasn't a too big of a newb question.

Yes you can just open the lid. Many have done this as opposed to doing the deckplate, including myself. There are many threads on this topic. Personally i notice a change in intake tone and maybe a bit more power, but i actually prefer my lid closed, as I prefer the nice sharp acceleration sound, and I actually find my truck runs better after i close the lid.

uh, why? there is no down side to the deckplate as you can just put in the cover and its as if you didn't do it

im going to get around to that eventually, but im concentrating more on getting it fully offroad ready, and a decent stereo system put in (read expensive)

well the only thing it really did for me is let big chunks of crap in my box like leafs and such, iv seen where someone put a screen as well but if iam going to go that into it i might as well get the K&N intake tube and cone filter. (which i wouldnt)

yeah i hear that but the K&N systems are WAY more than doing the deck plate and doing the intake silencer removal mod. and for something that does about the same thing i would stick with the deckplate. i love my deckplate mod and ISR but i am thinking about adding the screen even though i havn't had to many problems with crap getting in there. something to think about doing though if you do decide to go with the mod i guess.

umm i did it once it was ok but the deckplate is 10x better well worth my time and also trueflow is better than any filter

I love my deckplate and my ISR, Im waiting on the trueflow till after rainy/mud season, and yes put a screen in there....

how is putting in a screen "might as well get the K&N Intake"?

because a grand total of $11 and 30 minutes is to much for you?

you would rather spend $200 and spend 45 minutes installing.

x2 not to mention the possibility of sucking in water offroad is just that much higher with such an open system. i guess preference for that is based on amount of time spent off road

i haveint had any water get close to it now if you plan on crossing a river i could see it sucking up water

i was referring to the cone filter setup being able to suck up water more easily. with the deckplate open, it would have about the same clearance level to suck up water but with it sealed, theres less of a chance of it sucking up water from the stock intake in the fender

thanks for the feedback guys... but I was just wondering if opening the lid would do basically the same thing or if the deckplate actually makes that much more difference (we're probably talking about a total area of 1cm3 more....) And for those of you that said you didn't like it please explain why... and also I do a decent amount of off-roading so I want to keep the water out of the intake as best as possible. See its just that when I was reading about the Deckplate mod I was like...."why not just open the lid, it'll do the same thing." but I was just wondering if that hypothesis what decent or if i'm just missing something.

id rather just stick with my air box untouched honestly. but i do like the trueflow system and i plan on getting it someday because i do not like the silencers on the intake tube. i did do the mod and i always have the hole always covered up and so thats why i said if i was going to use a screen just to keep out leafs out, I might has well get something that just is always 'open'. i just didnt notice anything with the mod.

yah actually i've been meaning to remove the silencers (ISR mod) over doing the deckplate mod because i like the more aggresive sound and god knows everyone is looking for some hidden horsepower like me.

to answer the original question, several people are here have opted to just open the lid of their airbox and have discussed that in threads. there are no adverse effects as long as you can make sure the filter stays sung and does not fall forward, creating an opening for unfiltered air to get through. one person has even ziptied the filter in place. good luck
