'92 rear axle leaking...everywhere. Need advice.

Hi, new to the forums here. I was hoping some of you could help me out.

I have a '92 4x4, SR5 V6 extended cab pickup. My rear axle is leaking. The pumpkin is leaking from the front and the rear (a friend said it looked like the diff plate was actually porous with rust). I also have some oil on my rear tires, so I guess it's leaking over there as well. Because of the rust, I want to just replace the rear axle.

Is this the best bet? I was told the rear diff plate is pressed on, and that I can't really repair it anyways. So, if I need to replace it, what is the ratio of the gears I'm looking for in a replacement? What other years will fit my truck?

Please help if you can!

mike

You can always swap the gears from this truck into your new axle. Toyota 3rds are very easy to swap in/out.

you are looking for axle years 89-95.5 some other might fit, but thats a pretty good range. As far as gears, if you dont want to swap out the 3rd you can read the vin tag on the inside of the driver door. This should help: http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

RE-RE. you even posted in the sticky that has almost every ifs gear link in it. for shame. lol.

RE-RE is right, you can just swap out the gears. But you also need to change out the seals if there is oil on your tires. If you can get a non-rusted axle for cheap, screw it, change out the whole thing.

If the axle is in decent shape and not rusted out like the third, which seems a little unlikely, read that sticky on how to swap the third in your axle.

Did you check the vent on top of the axle to make sure its not plugged ?, that can make your axle leak every were if it can`t breathe.

Okay, thanks for the help. I'll check out that vent as well. Is this vent something that I can unclog and have things in proper working order again? Or will I need to swap things out anyways? Thanks again.

You can unscrew the vent and clean it, and put it back on. If its plugged that will force oil out of the seals, once its cleaned that should fix the problem.
