'88 toyota sputtering, Bigger carb?
So i have a '88 toyota truck, and when i put my foot into it it starts to sputter because it isnt getting the right air gas mixture. So how would i fix this? A bigger carb? im trying to figure out if this is something i can do fairly easily. Thanks

Teuf, trucks came standard as carbs until '88 with EFI as an option, both 2wd and 4wd. '89+ 4x4 came standard with EFI and you could special order them to have carbs until they switched to Tacomas in '95.5. 2wds came standard with carbs until '92 or so with the option of EFI, then it switched. Carbs got less common after '92 because they had to be special ordered.

before diagnosing any carb problems, make sure your basic tune up items are done (plugs, dist cap, wires, air filter, pcv, ignition timing (very important)) Also make sure valve lash is correct as too tight/loose will affect air/fuel intake. After that make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks. Don't forget any leaking oil pan and valve cover gasket as this will cause a vacuum leak as well.
Download yourself a FSM as well. you can get it here: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/87-4Runne...4runner_88.pdf
You can also look here for carb tuning: http://www.bluebassdesign.com/boonin/carb_faq/#cc
hope this helps.

It sounds to me like to original poster doesn't even know if he has a carb, so maybe we should wait until he "checks it out".
The stock carb (if you have one) was built to fit your truck. Otherwise it wouldn't have worked from the time it rolled off the factory floor.
Sputting on acceleration is often a leaking accelerator pump. Find out what you've got under the hood, do some internet searching, learn about it, then post if you have more specific questions. Could be the entire carb needs to be rebuilt or replaced, maybe just carb spray cleaning on-vehicle. Who knows.

yeah i have done almost all of the tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. havent done my air filter yet and havent checked the ignition timing. my oil pan is fine checked it out when i changed my oil and filter, and i need to check the vacuum for leaks. i cant park it and tear into it because its my daily driver so im trying to get to know what i can so i can rip into it on the weekend and get it put back together. thanks, for those who actually helped out, i can start from here.
