87 Turbo randomly dying

No rhyme or reason, happens often - the truck just dies, it seems electrical as there's no sputtering or anything, just dead. Then it'll start, but it usually has to sit for awhile, though sometimes it'll start again right away.

FWIW it has 340k on the chassis, and some rust and corrosion, so the chances of a bad ground or electrical problem is high..

Any ideas?

how long does it run before it dies? are you able to drive it a while before it dies? does it die while idling or while driving. are you pulling anything with it when it dies? did you just recently put gas in it?

Im not towing anything, and it has had fresh gas put in it from an empty tank.

It usually doesn't make it very far - maybe 5 miles.. Usually long enough to barely warm up. I haven't tried taking it on any long trips for fear of dying on the freeway..

Bad voltage regulator?

Sorry your truck is giving you issues - good luck!

If you give up and decide on an engine swap...let me know if you want to part out with the turbo thermostat housing?

If it was a fuel issue, wouldn't it tend to sputter as it dies? It doesn't sputter at all, it's just like killing the ignition..

Not gonna part it, but I'd consider selling it - 80k rebuild by a toy tech, this is the first problem I've had with it..

My 87 does the same thing , I swaped out the ignition mod and the coil seams to help so far . If possible get a used one I did and didn't want to spend the $600.00 for the modual alone . how much do you want for it if you deside to sell it ?
