So I got an 87 with a rebuilt 22r and stock carb. The truck has been sitting for about 3 years and has 214k miles. So I drained all the gas, put new fuel line in, replaced the fuel pump and plugs, new oil, but it won't run for crap. Won't idle or rev, just sputters.

So anyways, I took the carb off thinking to clean it out but I can't get the air horn off because the screws are seized up so I was thinking about just tossing it and trying a Weber now. It definitely looks like it has seen better days.

The truck is going to be a desert prerunner, not a daily driver or crawler. I also plan on running an engine cage so I would like to minimize clutter, and I also have a 32 gallon cell, so fuel economy isnt much of an issue. Engine is stock but I do plan on putting headers on it, maybe a cam in the future.

So would the Weber 38 be a good choice? Or any other ideas on getting it running again?

I had a 32/36 on my '89 - was great. Plenty driveable, with real good power when the secondary opened.

Recommend a header too ... mine was a Pacesetter - it sucked, was always fighting exhaust leaks at the flange. Get a Thorley or a NWOR...

i have a weber 32\36 and a thorley header on my '79. runs great, super smooth and starts right up. i got the electric choke version and plugged all the coolant ports on the manifold, i don't know if the 87's had water or electric chokes from the factory though.
i would say get a weber!

i have a 38 on my 22r, has a pretty big cam and header. that thing makes so much more power than the stocker. i actually ran the motor after i built it with the stock carb while i was waiting for the weber in the mail. unbelievable difference. you won't be disappointed.

Seems like a lot of money to me, but I hear Weber prices are A LOT more expensive now than "back in the day". LC Engineering has it for the same price, and they're a known supporter of the Toyota community...

LC is like $460 for their Weber conversions now. And $1500 for the sidedrafts...ouch.

So I got my 38 today. Does anybody know how to hook up the electric choke on it? Wiring is not my strong point...

One wire to the side - there's a little screw over a white plastic cylinder.

You mean on the carb or on the truck? I see where the one wire plugs to on the carb, just don't know where to take it to. Instructions are pretty weak too...

Got the carb on and it runs great now, however its spewing oil all over the back passenger side. I would assume its coming out of the hole in the block where the EGR used to be? The kit comes with a block off plate for the intake port, but not the back one...Do I just need to block it off or did I have a vacuum line wrong?

No pics, trucks not at my house and I forgot to take my camera. I'll see if I can get it sorted out tomorrow, if not Ill snap some pics. Im hoping its that EGR port on the block or something else simple, and not the block/headgasket...

I'm pretty sure it needs to be blocked off, but not 100%...

you can either get the egr block off plate for the head from LCE or use the gasket and fashion your own

Yup, ended up making my own out of some .125" plate. No oil leaks now. Next problem is fuel delivery. Bought one of those spectre fuel regulators form Checkers but all it does is severly restrict the flow. Anybody run an electric fuel pump on these? And would it be OK to drive it about 20 miles with no regulator (direct from the stock mechanical pump)?
