4th gen tire questions

Alright I did quite a bit of thread searching the past few days and came up with these deductions based upon what I read, I'm just looking for confirmation on 1 and 2 below for my decision-making:

Fact: stock tire on SE is 265/65/17 (30.6" per internet tire size calculator)

1. A 265/70/17 (31.6") will fit on my stock rim and w/o any rubbing or lift required.
2. A 285/70/17 (32.7") will fit only if I get new wheels w/4.5BS and a lift, and then I will still have to trim the plastic and hack the wheel well liners.

Thanks in advance.

1. true, a 265/70/17 should fit without any rubbing or lift required.
2. partially true - you don't necessarily have to get new wheels, but you may want to, and you will definitely need a lift ... and then you will definitely need to do a lot of trimming/cutting.

also depends on which tire you're thinking of, because every manufacturer's 285 seems to have a slightly different outer diameter.

2.r0cky has a good point, every tire manufacturer is different as far as what the actual tire size is, also something to keep in mind is that wheel manufacturers are kinda the same as far as measuring backspacing, etc.

That being said, if you are going to be using spacers to lift no more than 3", I am not sure you could avoid getting new wheels with any offroad type of 285's. If you can find a tire store that will test fit tires at no charge, you might be able to find a smaller than average 285 a/t tire that will work on stock wheels. But I doubt that from my own experience.

When I put on my Daystar lift, I tried the BFG m/t 285/70/17 on my stock wheels and they would rub on the upper A-arm with only 1 full turn of the steering wheel. Even with a 1/4" spacer I still had rubbing and some scary side effects.

Good luck, if you take the dive, I would be prepared to fork over $ for wheels.

I kept my stock rims and I have no spacers with BF Goodrich A/T 285/70R17's. My tires do rub a little on full turn on the a arm but other than that, they are good. The only trimming I had to do was on the plastic in front of the tire and I took off the front mud flaps. The rear clears all around.

P,
This is from memory so you can search these out;
1. Lefty has 265/70-17 BFG AT's on Amer Racing 0-offset wheels/ daystar original lift. He has a bit of rubbing so removed mudflaps (I think). The AR's stick out more so rubbing plastic.

2. Sedonaz has 285/70-17 on stock SE rims/ daystar? lift. He had to cut some plastic as Adam above did.

3. No lift, BFG AT's 265/70-17 on SE rims- look for Greenehorne's pics.

4. 265-70's will also still fit a full spare underneath. Not sure on 285's?

Tires: AT's- Revos, BFG AT's seem the most popular. I have also heard good things about Nitto Terragrapplers, Toyo's. But I hear that Yokohama's suck big time

for real tires, MTR's are the choice

seriously tho, I think if you do alot of street driving, Revo's seem to be the choice.

And the final question: WLO or not?

Good luck P, call me anytime if want too

Seems like you have done your homework. The big question as stated above will be A/T or M/T tires. Ther A/T tires do not have the big lugs on the side that will cause more rubbing like the M/Ts will. But you should fit 265/70/17 A/T with no lift. Most people who have fitted 285/75/16 (same as 285/70/17) have gone with M/Ts and user AMrican racing AR23 wheels. It worked fine with some trimming and stock A-arms.

Thanks for the input, guys. Ideally, I'd like to do 285/70/17 on AR Mojave's, but can't see spending the extra $$ on wheels for the extra 1/2+" or so of ground clearance gain vs. 265/70's. I'm also not sure I'm ready to trim plastic, but perhaps the impending ARB bumper will alleviates that problem? And I want to ensure the spare will fit underneath. So I guess if I pull the trigger it'll be the 265/70/17's on the factory wheels for now. Will probably do the Revo's as FirstToy suggested, or perhaps BFG A/T's, as most miles will be on asphault. WLO = White Letters Out? I dunno, I've always had 'em in in the past. I'll do the Daystar 2.5" at the same time. I'll call you when the UPS guy deliver's the lift, FirstToy

SOunds lyou will and up with the same setup as I have now. Daystar lift, Hanna slider, XREAS and 265/70/17 Revos

You can do some good wheeling with it. I'll post some pics and vid on the Hollister trip report thread.

On a side note, you have th 04 with V8, so check if the spare will fit 265/70/17, as I think you have the upgraded tow hitch. I have an 03 and the bigger tire fits finein the spare area. You might have a problem so check first before you get 5 new tires. I like to have my spare the same size as my other wheels. The V8 is permamnent 4WD so it is a good idea to have all the wheels the same all the time.

Yeah keep James busy, he has way too much free time

Well my 285 doesn't even come close to fitting underneath, it is sitting on my roof rack now.

I second Bulldog-yota's reccomendation of testing the 275 underneath.

dang Lance, look who's talking! Mr. GF400

P,
I'll help with your lift if I have time but put out a post when you're ready and someone will help out.

Also check out the Nitto Terragrappler in 265-70, I hear good things. I have to admit I like the looks of the BFG AT's alot too
