i disagree sorry!!! the big thing now is to go big on both!!! big rims and big muds. 00328 i am thinking like you!!! i love the look of some nice big blingin rims but love the big muds. i have a jeep wrangler i offroad alot. there is gonna be a small difference with s,aller rims and a same size tire but not much. right now i have a 3rd gen 4runner with 18's. am going to be geting a 4th gen and my plans as of now are to lift it and put 20's with Toyo mtr's. they make a 33/12.5r20 and they look sweet!!!! not sure right now how much and what i need to do to get them to fit but thats the plan!!!! i say go for it dude!!! when you do send me some pics!!! you'll have one freakin tight 4runner!!!!

You realize that this thread is almost 2 years old, right?

(and 00328 hasn't posted anything since this thread...)

Even two years later, the fact remains that anything over 17's is a bad choice for off-roading a 4Runner. You need to have huge tires to have huge rims, and the weight issues are a killer.

I run them on my '03 4runner for the summer time and it is only for the road. They are 20x8.5 rims, and the tires are 265/50/20. Not really rubber bands but like everyone said they are not for offroad. Oh and ya this thread was a troll!

I know this is an old thread but I'm gonna share my experience.

Back in '87, I bought an '85 VW Golf GTI, which was in perfect condition. It had 14" wheels with 185/60 tires on it, which were the factory wheels and tires.

Three days after I bought it, I was driving down a road, and hit a pothole. The rim bent, peeled away from the tire, and the tire lost air immediately. The tire was not damaged.

Keep this in mind: This happened on the street, and many of the getto vehicles with large rims have less sidewall than my GTI had, with some having what looks like less than half the sidewall. Now imagine a truck with large wheels in a mudhole with the tire spinning, and then hitting a rock or stump. Or rockcrawling and contacting a rock. Or just simply smacking a curb on the street.

Tires obviously can take impact better than wheels can, so you need more sidewall, not less. And the extra sidewall helps the tire conform to obstacles better, which helps off road performance.

With tires over 40", it's pretty much a moot point. But with more normal sizes, it's a waste of money.

Another thing you need to consider is the maximum tire diameter rating for the wheel itself. Before you get any wheel, make sure that it will handle the tire diameter without bending. The larger the diameter of the tire, the more leverage there is to increase the side loads on the wheel. Large bling wheels are most likely rated for the street tires that you normally see on them. So be careful before you use any wheel for off road tires.

I had a '78 Bronco that came with cheap steel aftermarket wheels, and I put 33" tires on it. It wasn't long before I noticed one that was bent. It was on the rear, and I could feel the rear end wag side to side slightly when I would spin the tires in mud with the Bronco not moving. That's when I found out about the maximum tire size rating. The wheels were rated for a 30" tire.

My Tacoma came with 16" wheels, and I plan on keeping them, since I don't plan on running anything bigger than a 33" tire. If I were going to a 35" or 37" tire, then I might would consider a 17" wheel, just to try to keep sidewall flex in check for street handling, since my truck is a daily driver.

Boy, talk about a blast from the past! LOL.
I'm still here and kickin'.
2 1/2 years later still haven't done anything about wheels or a lift, have done many other mods though.
Been spending all my extra $$ on guns and ammo before the Dems get in and make it against the law to even possess a match(might burn yourself with it).
Anyway, hope to have an OME lift installed early this Spring and then some wheels and tires.
I love the way it handles in stock form, but need more ground clearance!

I'm not a fan of form over function and oversize rims kill MPGs,reduce handling, extend braking distances and hamper acceleration all for the sake of looks. Brake upgrades are a nice idea but very few people do this upgrade.

I'm not into a trend that simply hurts almost every performance aspect of any vehicle I own.
