'04 Tire sizes-Need quick info- (Tire calculator link, too)
I am looking to get new tires for my '04Runner Limited. Stock is 265/65 R17. I am considering 265/70 R17.
I've searched the forum and it seems posts discussing these options also involve people doing suspension and other mods.
Can 265/70 R17 be run without any lift or suspension mods without any problems?
I plan to order tomorrow (Mon) am, so quick advice is appreciated

i wouldnt worry about it. a 5% increase in sidewall ratio equals about an inch in overall diameter...so you'll be just under 32...and youre not going any wider. do a lock to lock check on your stock size and see if there would be any rubbing issues with the added .5" on each side. what tires you goin with?

The diameter is 30.6
The ones I am considering are Kelly, some new design not on their website yet. The tread looks like long arcs running along the length of the tread and alternately touching arcs in the middle. Sort of staggered and has little nubs in the bottom of the grooves. The arcs are about 10 inches (maybe?) long and has sniping. Has side lugs, but not alternating.
I'll take a pic if I put them on.
My local tire guy where I've been buying tires for about 20 years just got them in and has a set on his truck. Says for the 500 miles he has on them, they've been fine and did well in his wet yard.
I'd be part of a small, informal "test group" in my small town. I expect 1500-2500 miles per month and winter is coming. I don't do serious offroading, but regularly drive on farm and dirt (usually mud ) roads and through grass yards that I don't want to tear up.
The Dunlops are okay, but at about 30k, the front hydroplane a lot. 60k warranty means they have tread, not that they are decent to run on the road, so looking to try something else. They ride nicely, but with winter around the corner...
Comments? Opinions?

Thanks to all for the replies. Nice FAQ. I'll be sure to give you my results with the new tires, too.
My backup plan was to go with 245/70 17's if the rubbing would have been an issue.
Interesting note. When I was checking the current tires, I put my hand behind the tire at the top and had one knuckle's clearance between the edge of the tire and the suspension. Didn't check, but I'm assuming coil spring.
I didn't notice that part mentioned in the FAQ and don't think a lift kit would fix this (?) Of course, different wheels can help, I have the Limited alloy wheels.
Did I miss something?

with the 265/70/17 that you're considering, you will have no rubbing on the upper control arms. as you get larger tires such as 285's the width becomes an issue and one of the easiest solution is to get different (aftermarket) wheels to accomodate for the diff sec wheels.

I know you've got a 4th gen, but I just put on 265/70/17's on my 3rd gen and have no rubbing issues at all. The tires I went with are Bridgestone REVO's. I actually had Kelly Safari's right before these tires. I was NOT impressed with the Kelly's at all. The wore pretty fast. I got just under 40k miles out of them before they were bald.
Are you going to be off-roading? If so, I'd suggest getting REVO's, Toyo Open Country A/T or Nitto Terragrapplers. I don't have any experience with the latter two, but the REVO's are great tires. They also have a 50k warranty that come standard. Plus, Bridgestone gives you a 30 day "test drive" on their tires. You can return them, no questions asked. I can attest to that, since I've had to return a set of Bridgestones before.
If you're just going to be mostly on-road, but want good traction in the snow, I'd still vote for the REVO's, as they are a very quiet tire on the road and ride pretty well. If not, Michelin LTX A/T or M/S will be good choices and the treadlife on those are just about the best on the market.
So, to summarize, thumbs down on the Kelly, thumb up for Mich LTX, and two thumbs up for the REVO's.

Well, got the Kelly P265/70 R17 Safari Trex mounted. Less than 150 miles, and I don't like them.
They list max 35 PSI and the sidewalls seem too soft. They make the cornering spongy, as if the back end wants to break loose. I've been really trying them out on cornering and such.
They are not loud, but noticeably noisier than the Dunlops I had on. This isn't a dislike, just a comment.
I'm going to stick with them a few more days and max the air pressure (should've been already, but just to be sure), then if I still don't like them, I'm going to see about the LT version.

Same size, different ply rating.. the numbers 265/70/17 are the size.. P means passenger car, and LT means Light Truck.
Why would you max the air pressure? The tires you took off are a P rated tire as well with 35psi as the max too...
But I always reccommend a LT vs a P.

I believe the AT20's I took off were max 44PSI and I ran about 40PSI and they handled really well.
I wanted something that would wear a little longer. They still had tread, but started to hydroplane. I also thought a little bigger would be nice and a bit better offroad would be cool, too.
I also see on Kelly's website they don't list a LT 265/70/17, but do list 245/70/17, same height as my 265/65/17 but about an inch narrower. Didn't want to compromise cornering at highway speeds, so went bigger in P rating instead.
I think the LT's have a little deeper tread. Not sure if it is added to the diameter or subtracted from the base profile ???
Thoughts?

No, they were my second set, Dunlop AT20 P265/65 R17 from my local tire guy (who I trust). Stamped on side, Max 44PSI (45?). So I ran 40 PSI.
He said the wear was real even, no inflation issues, no alignment issues.
Maybe I was being too greedy, looking for a better tire...

gotcha... if you want a better tire go with the 265/70/17 BFG AT in a 6ply (LT), thats what I am going to run when my OE's wear out..
