Somehow in the rush of things i put the crankshaft gear on backwards and it got ugly real fast. i thought everything was good, so i went to torque down the crankshaft bolt and i hear a popping noise followed by a ping!
then the motor was locked up, and low and behold in my findings this is what happened.
i think the part on the timing cover that got ate up is a crucial piece as it allows oil to puddle up and keep the gear lubricated correct? im kind of hesitant to put this cover back on it. Luckily i figured this all out before i started it. but still one little mistake and it turns ugly.
i was in a rush to get it out of my parents garage, and rushing to get it done and over with because i really didnt want to work on it anyway. now i wish i would have taken my time :/
who wants to help a brother out? i need a timing cover on the cheap or fo fwee. i could go to a junkyard but i really dont want to spend the time taking one off.

initially i was pretty enraged. so i just walked away, called it a night and cleared my head and started tearing it apart the next day. not a hard fix really, the only things damaged were the cover, chain, and gear. easy fix unless i have to go yank a cover from the salvage yard which im really not looking forward to

I just thew away my old cover today. It was wore pretty close to going through to water jacket.
What timing set is that....that gear looks like its aluminum. My engnbldr gear was some serious steel.

its definatley not aluminun but i dont think its steel hahah. it was a duralast kit from autozone. dont bash me. i always buy autozone stuff.
do you think i would be ok running the old oem gear that i pulled off in the first place? i dont think it could possibly be worn enough to make a difference

i spent like 154 or so....got chainset, waterpump, oil pump, and timing cover.

eh. ive heard horror stories about the metal backed guides, and good stories. but anyway. its done ive already bought it. haha i just need a new chain and lower gear i suppose.

Oh no, that looks o.k., you can just re-use it. No worries. NOT!!!
Happens to the best of us though. Don't feel too bad.
I should tell you about the time my brother accidentally left a rag stuffed in an intake port on a diesel engine he was rebuilding. Got it all put back together and went to start it up. SHAPOW!!! BANG!!!! CRUNCH!!!
Add another new cylinder sleeve(cracked into three seperate pieces), connecting rod(bent at a ~20 deg. angle), piston(tweaked), rings(ruined) and head gasket(just because you should)to the list of parts needed to complete that build. Pretty horrific carnage. Plus the cost of the added hours needed to reinstall all those. Not really though, he had to do all the extra work for free of course. Luckily his boss found it to be a little bit amusing, and didn't fire immediately. Didn't even charge him for the parts he ruined. What a guy eh?

DANGGGG, so sorry, man! I would have walked away as well, initially.... Then I'd have LAUGHED MY RUMP OFF at myself, as I have a few times now, hahaha. THAT STINKS... I think the price of the cover from Tod at Engnbldr is like 54$, no? Maybe cheaper at the yard, but not much I wouldn't think. Plus, they're NEW from Tod. I had to get one, my chain had warn REALLY close to through on my old cover.

why lie? haha i thought it was funny after i was done being pissed off. not funny for my wallet though however. but i found a guy on another forum willing to sell me a timing cover, bottom gear, water pump, and oil pump for 30 bucks.

If your oil pump and water pump work...dont swap em for used stuff. Thats silly. I tossed mine. the gear i could se in a pinch...and the covers all good...but not pumps.
