I have had the 22re and I really liked it. It won't win any races for sure but mine was reliable and pulled my little 1990 reg cab just fine up hills and around town. I think that I got about 21 mpg out of it, bone stock.

if you want torque, and fuel efficiency, why not buy a roasted engine/truck, and fabricate a full electric truck
with 2 turbines, it will rip the wheels out of the rubber.
quiet and faster than a motorcycle, (although your round trip may suffer from instant refill/charge times).

or invent a steam powered engine.

just ideas.
someday we will arrive to a way we travel that doesnt cripple us.

invent a steam powered engine? hate to break the news but that ones already been done...and is way less efficient than an internal combustion engine

22re's aren't bad. like i said go take a test drive, and see how you feel about the power.

Guys have spent a lot of money on 22RE's and got some good results (200hp with 4 carbs and stuff) but that is for racing as the engine was not made for that kind of power so longevity will suffer large. It is a truck engine, long stroke torque motor. If you expect to throw some money at it and get even 150hp I think you picked the wrong engine. You would be way farther ahead getting a 3.4 again.

Remember gasoline has only so much energy in it and internal combustion engines are only so effiecent so to get more power you need more gas. I like iDanity's message, go electric.

i hate to say it, maybe the older yota isnt the best bet for you....

i have 2 trucks right now, a 91 toyota 4X4 pickup and a 02 ford ranger 2X4, both with 4 clynders...



like everyone has said, the 22RE gets about 20 mpg... my ford with i think a 2.7 in it, gets almost 30mpg. but i like having the 4X4 to play with...

the 22RE is about 115hp and the ford has 145hp, and you can tell the difference...

I think what he ment was "You won't see any (non-Toyota) v8 last that long" lol If you guys go to toyota.com they have a ton of "High miler" stories about guys putting 300,000+ on their Tundras. Long live the Toy!

And just to throw my 2 cents in. You said at the begging "I traded me double cab tacoma for the chevy, smart huh" (or something along those lines)
You seam like you might have been happy with that. Is the 3.4 totally out of the picture for you? I understand if you like to work on rigs why you would want to make th 22re your own but I'm getting 17-20 out of my 3.4 and there's plenty to do to get some more ponies out of her.
