transfercase removal

I searched the forum but found nothing. I found a t-case in the local pick and pull, and was wondering if it's possible to remove the t-case without removing the tranny as the Chiltons manual says to. Also the truck is an '86 will this t-case work for a dual setup in my '90 Pickup? The '86 is a 22re
5spd and so is my truck.

Ok that's all I need to know. How do I tell if it's top shift or not? I'm heading there tomorrow, also going to grab the rear 3rd member out of a v6 4runner they got for a spare.

If it has a shifter hanging out of the top.

If not it will have two lil shifter rails coming out where it would go to your tranny.

take out the shift lever, remove the snap ring to do so. You won't be able to slide the TC back far enough if you do that. I

If I was you discuss price before you pull it. That way you have more room to bargain. The junk yard knows that if you pull it your apted pay more since you've already committed to it.

The ones up here aren't really strict like that. It's a giant yard with rows of cars thats it. There's really no inventory just, "I think we got one of those go check around"

So which one do I use for the "rear" case? The one I have in the truck now or the one I just bought?

Someone that's done it can chime in here, but I think you put the one you just bought in front of your original t-case (using an adapter, +you only use the front 1/2 of the new unit). Your original t-case will sit about 6.5" back to the rear, so shortening the rear driveshaft and lengthening the front will be needed. I think you can choose to either use the original cross member mount with or without an additional one to support the added length of the set-up. Marlin Crawler has a page on his site that shows the adapters and goes through how it all works.
