trailer wiring?
hey guys, i want to run a completely new wire harness for my trailer, cuz the harness i have goes to a box in the back, and so many wires are cut, or missing or all over the place. so i bought 25ft of trailer wire 4 prong, so i know that the white is ground. it says that the green wire is for right stop, and turn. so do i wire the same green wire to my brake light and also my turn signal? how does that work? cuz on my father in laws mazda pickup, hes got the amber turn signals, and he has a 4 prong harness, and it works fine, im just not sure how to do it. thx
p.s i searched previous threads, and none explain how to wire it yourself, only to buy the connector, but mines so ed up i dont think it would work.

whether you want to do it or not...
you have to get a trailer wiring converter/adapter
... or ...
wire the trailer with separate turn signals and brake lights and a 5 conductor connector.
No other way around it...
the 4 conductors plug:
1 left turn/stop, 1 right turn/stop, 1 marker/running lights, 1 ground.
your truck:
1 left turn, 1 right turn, 1 stop, 1 marker/running lights, 1 ground
you would require 5 wires (without the converter) and the trailer lighting done appropriately

otherwise, if you're really stubborn, you can either wire the connector to flash the appropriate light on the trailer with your turn signals and not have brake lights, or have brake lights and no turn signals.

yeah, DC. I forgot about that.
on another note, sometimes you can get away with a trailer that only has night-time markers and reflectors if the tail lights on the tow vehicle can be clearly seen from behind the trailer, so the trailer has to be either very low or narrow.

First thing I would do, is yank any non-stock wiring out, and repair all the wiring harnesses back to stock. THEN buy the connector harness, and do it right.
The previous dummy who messed everything up did it by trying to wire it the exact way you are planning on doing it. If you dont know anything about wiring and circuits, why are you going to mess with it? Just do it right the first time with a connector kit and be done with it.

I'm not sure that you can buy just the converter any longer. Mine just failed and I had to order a whole new T Connector from NAPA to get a new converter. I spoke to 6 different auto parks stores and they all looked at me like I had horns. NAPA was the only store that knew what I needed and they said I had to buy the whole harness to get it. Good luck.

generically speaking, you'd need a wiring converter for european vehicle to american trailer, or for separate turn signals and brake lights to common turn signal and brake lights.
every auto parts store around me sells them- autozone, kragen (schucks), pep boys, bap-geon, napa, etc., wal-mart, lowes, home depot....

Go to Canadian Tire and ask for a trailer wiring kit for your truck. Tell them it needs an integrator box. It converts the separate turn signals (4 bulb) from stock to American 2-bulb style. They run about $35cdn.
There is the option of getting a unit that draws power directly from the battery. If you do this, make sure that you add a fuse near the battery. There isn't one in the kit until directly at the converter box... not safe. I've personally seen one fire from that wire, and heard of 3 more.
