total noob question

so i was just thinkin aboot it; what would happen if i left my hubs locked on my 86 4runner all the time? what if i only locked one and put it in 4wd? just curious

lol trust me you dont wanna know... lmao. people in sd always screwed with mine, and i took it back to the mechanic 8 times for brake issues before i finalloy realised what it was. (he did everything free since i had just had a brake job done). one hub was locked, the other wasnt. it makes your braking and steering feel weird.

Driving with your hubs locked is ok as long as you keep it under 35 and minimum driving. I advise you not to just because it turns your cv's and can wear them out faster. just my 2 cents

Why would you want to put it in 4wd with one hub locked?

You can drive as fast as your engine can take with your hubs locked. Most trucks like mine with ADD spin the front drivetrain all the time (no hubs, we have flanges) and it holds up fine. I mean those CV's are a lot stronger than most pocket rocket sports car CV's and look how fast they go.

Locking one in 4wd will do nothing to help your forward progress unless you have a front locker. The differential will just spin one rear wheel and the unlocked shaft essentially leaving you with 2wd-like performance.

locking one hub is like pissing in the wind unless you have a locker with the open diff it wont get you anywhere. but there is nothing really wrong with driving around with your hubs locked, while it does put more wear on your front drivetrain you shouldnt hurt anything. in the winter i drive around with my hubs locked most of the time.

My brother ruined the T-case on FJ60 because is hubs were stuck in the locked position even though the dial said "Free", according to the guy at Wimberely 4x4 (can't remember his name) who is an early FJ specialist, because of running at highway speeds to often.

maybe with the old FJ's that was a problem, but 2nd and 3rd gen trucks should have no problem driving with the hubs locked. We rarely ever unlocked ours on our 90 standard cab 22R-E, and we never wore out a CV. we put a little over 100K miles on it too...

Yeah - you'll put more wear on the parts but you won't break anything.

Having only one hub locked is essentially how ADD works.......

I did read in a Toyota care manual that periodically running with your hubs locked but not in 4wd can actually help prevent maintenance because it helps keep moving parts lubricated. but not to do it all the time for wear reasons.
I lock mine for about 2days/month during daily driving to keep them lubed.

Yeah, that's right - just as you said to keep everything lubricated. Better yet put it in 4wd and run down a straight road. Better yet, put it in 4wd and take if off-road!

I put mine in 4wd with hubs unlocked and drive it about 5 miles, then lock the hubs and put it back in 2wd. This helps keep everything wet with oil that needs it. I do this once a month.

Leaving the hubs locked hurts your mileage and I'm not sure that it's good for the ring and pinion gears since they are being driven backwards when you do this. If you're driving in winter or in slippery conditions where you might need 4wd on a moment's notice, I'd say go for it... But lock both hubs.
