Timing advancing

Im trying to set my timing by ear and had a quick question, after you jumper the Te1 and E1 and the idle smooths out at the lower rpm does the engine rev when you advance or retard?

Usually, rpms increase(slightly) when advancing, and drop when retarding. Its really best to set your timing with a light...

There's a whole process; google "toyota factory service manual" for a '93 FSM.

I think it was, i took out the distributer and rotated it one tooth. Got the timing to half way between the 5 and 8 mark, runs soooooo much quieter now. thx for the help guys.

The PO probably replaced the dist and forgot to check the timing, hopfully that will help my crappy MPG
