See now I went to toyodiy.com and cross referenced the starter and it said the same starter was used in 89 4runners. Anywase I bought one and was just wondering if it will work. It looks exactly the same as the stock one just a bit smaller. My surf had two batteries but now it has one batter and a kill switch on the other side lol

Lol yup I can! Hopefully someone else replies with a definite answer and maybe a part number if I'm lucky lol, my engine was rebuilt 70000 kms ago with a 3l head, everything top to bottom was done but ya I always put some conditioner In every new tank.
BUT PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME IF THOS STARTER WORKS BEFORE I PAY SOMEONE TO DO THE SWAP AND IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!

I've owned and worked on lots of 2.4 diesels, as fas as I can remember the starters are totally different.
The diesel has a much larger motor plus it's mounted on the other side of the engine (compared to a 3VZE).
Just looked at some bellhousings to confirm that.
Maybe a 22R starter would fit, but youy're gone burn that starter, especially in winter when it's harder to start a diesel.

Thanks for the input guys, I guess the only thing I can do Is wait and see if it fits, I don't see why it wouldn't, and yes this starter is smaller but even if I got one for the diesel from over seas it will still be smaller no matter what. At least that's what I heard

ALright I guess the new starter cost is 1500 dollars from japan do I'm guessing the one I bought for it won't fit lol... Anywase the starter that is in it right now works most of the time but sometimes it just clicks once, would this be a starter issue or the solenoid issue?

just rebuild the starter that is in it.. could also be the brushes or contacts.. but once it out any starter or alternator / electric motor ship should be able to rebuild it

Everyone says its the contacts that need to be replaced, if only taking out the starter was that easy, you would think it would be with only two bolts lol but to bad one of the bolts is impossible to get off!!! I can get a socket on it but nothing else will fit lol not even the ratchet.

man i am feeling your pain..
my mechanic who has done my injection pump and my timing/water pump twice.. told me that he loves working on my car although its a bitch... but he wouldnt even attempt the starter... and he works on s kylines and lots of nicer rides... he said the one diesel line is in the way and there is no way the bolt is coming off...
im hoping i get many more trouble free years before i have a issue lol...
p.s i did the contacts in my suzuki truck starter and it was really easy..but any normal shop should be able to rebuild yours for id say 75-100 bucks tops.

I recall I used a 14/17 starter wrench. The curved model that can reach over the starter.
If the bolts were to tight (that wrench is quit short) I removed the 8 bolts from the crossmember, dropped the gearbox a bit so the engine tilted backwards and almost hit the firewall.
Next I used two extensions (about 3 ft in total !) plus a cardan joint. You now should have a little bit of room between body and bellhouse to reach the bolt.
It helps if you have someone guiding the cardan joint, or better hold it.
I don't recall ever needing to remove any other crap to get the starter out, but since I'm getting old i might have forgotten that bit.
Hope this make sense.
