replaced the timing chain on my 89 truck 2.4L. installed the dist. at TDC, and it fired right up. the timing was about 35 degrees off, so i pulled the dist. moved it one tooth. no start. pulled the dist. move two teeth the other way. no start. pulled #1 plug. brought piston up to tdc, and it matched the timing marks on the oil pump, TDC. installed the dist. with the rotor pointing to number one plug. no start. new plugs. getting gas to cold start injector. plug wires ohm out with in spec.

what do you think? my head is spinning from the trouble shooting.
forgot to mention when i was timing it and the timing was off, i forgot to short out the box. so it was pretty close to spec.

Are you sure that when you pull the distributor the #1 was at TDC? It may be that you were at the top of the exhaust stroke. You have to make sure that the #1 piston is at the top of the compression stroke. Pull the #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole on the first cylinder. Then turn the motor over by hand until you feel compression. Once you start to feel compression keep turning the motor over until the dot on the crank pulley lines up with the zero mark on the oil pump. Now that you are TDC pull the distributor cap and the rotor should be facing directly at the mark on the distributor housing. If it is off then pull out the distributor and turn the rotor so it is facing straight up. With the rotor in the 12:00 position push the distributor back in and the rotor will turn counter clockwise to about the 10:30 position. Your rotor will then line up with the mark on the distributor housing and your timing will be correct. Hope this helps.
