Special Service Campaign for 90-95 4Runners, 89-95 Trucks and 93-98 T100s

I was reading an article just released about Ford recalling 3.8 million trucks, and came across this tidbit:

Quote:
Toyota Motor Co., meanwhile, recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks amid concerns over the power steering system. The affected vehicles include 4Runner SUVs, compact pickups and T-100 pickups built between 1989 and 1998.

Toyota said a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels may fracture under conditions where the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. Owners will be notified beginning in mid-September, the company said.
This is the first I've heard about this recall.
Anyone else have any more info?

(This seems to be different from the ball joint recall for later models a few months ago)

I wonder which rod they're referring to. Maybe the rod connected to the ragjoint??
I know when I replaced my power steering rack, the guy I bought the part from told me that the 4runners and Tacomas both had problems with rusting around the inner tierods.

It would just about have to be. The steering shaft to the box is the only thing in common among that broad range of years, I think.

It's not in the NHTSA database yet anyway.

Flamedx4 mentioned something about a NHTSA database. Is that something on the net that anyone can access to look up recalls?

Special Service Campaign for 90-95 4Runners, 89-95 Trucks and 93-98 T100s

Guys,

Hope this isn't a repost but i found it today:

Toyota announced Tuesday that it will issue a voluntary "Special Service Campaign" in co-operation with NHTSA. The campaign involves certain power-steering equipped 1989-1996 4Runner SUVs, compact pick-ups and T-100 pick-ups (see update/edit below)

In these vehicles, a crack can develop in the steering relay rod if the steering wheel is turned repeatedly under conditions requiring extreme force, such as when the vehicle is stopped. In the worst possible case, the company said, the rod may fracture causing a loss of steering control.

Owners of these vehicles will be notified by mail, Toyota said, beginning in mid-September. Customers with questions are directed to contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

EDIT:

I called 800-331-4331 and got the years clarified. They are:

89 - 95 Toyota trucks with 4WD and power steering

90 - 95 Toyota 4Runners

93 - 98 Toyota T100 trucks

I got through to a phone rep who said that it's best to call in with your VIN because not all of the vehicles within those model/year ranges (above) will be covered. He said that it depends on where and when the vehicle was manufactured.

Bob

Thanks

hmmm, are they're ways to void the recall? lift kits, ect....? It'll be a month or so before I even can start to think about dealing with this.

Is it for 4Runners only with power steering or all? Referring to Bob's edit, he listed the trucks as 4wd and power steering, but nothing specified for the 4Runner, only 90-95.

yes, the ball join recall is still in effect for 2001 and 2002 4runners. 99-00 are not effected by the bj recall.

also, nothing annoyed me more than when my local fox news channel reported this and showed what was clearly a 98 4runner, not a 90 - 95

It looks to be all the vehicles with the torsion bar setup after and including '89.
Newer Toyotas with the rack and pinions setup doesn't seem affected.

I called the dealer in Costa Mesa. They checked my VIN against a notice they had received. They said my VIN wasn't included in the recall. They also said that the breadth of the recall hadn't been established for sure yet. Things should be clearer in a month or so . . . . so they said.

They said my truck was definitely part of the recall. It will be interesting taking in a 12-year-old truck for a recall. My body lift, suspension lift, and ball joint spacers are sure to raise a concern with some mechanics looking to beat the book rate. Lucky I know one Toyota tech here with a Toyota trail rig.

Has anyone actually seen or heard of one of these rods breaking? Guys bend idler arms and break tie rods all the time wheeling these trucks and they recall a part I've never heard of breaking. Sounds like a very scary failure (loosing steering at God only knows what speed), I'm not really wanting to go though that expenience.
