Yeah, I do think it's sort of funny. Can't you see a roomful of Toyota engineers looking at a relay rod, scratching their heads and saying 'Hmmm, this part wore out after 200,000 miles and 16 years, this is just unacceptable.'

I called Toyota today and my 94 truck is part of the recall campaign. I asked about the alignment and according to them the relay rod is in between the tie rods and when removed will require re-alignment of the front end. Toyota stated that the alignment was included at no charge as part of the campaign which works for me as I need an alignment anyway.

i called today and they said they will "check the alignment" but didn't necessarily say they would do an alignment service ...

sounds squishy to me...

Wahoo, my 94 runner is being serviced this weekend, they say they have to order the part and it may take a while????... this is along with about 20 other things that need a fixing...
I have to drive my sisters honda civic. She lives overseas. But i put a sheet of papaer on the back that says "MY REAL CAR IS A TOYOTA 4RUNNER"
I really hate little cars, its red too, so i feel like a woman...in the car.
not saying red cars arent cool...
just a red honda civic...come on now

That's normal, if they check it and it is all in spec there would be no need to adjust anything.

this is one of my first posts on this board, but i have been a habitual reader here for about a year or so. i called to see if my 94 4runner was covered under the recall and they said it was. my question is...ive been told by a friend/mechanic of mine that my pitman arms are worn out. i have an appointment with him to replace them in a couple weeks but i dont know if i should have him do that before or after i take it in for the recall. what do you guys think?

also, i dont know if i need an alignment or not. im guessing that i do because the truck pulls to the left a little. also, in the past few months it has slowly developed a shake around 60-65 mph. it felt kind of like a tire was out of balance, so i had them rebalanced and the shake is still there. possibly this could be fixed by an alignment. hopefully they will do this at no charge.

any thoughts on this are very welcome.

Mine is covered by the warranty! Woohoo! My 4runner is 2wd too. So, they got my new address and they are in the process of sending me out the letter.

dewey,
is ur shaking coming from the rear? your shaking problem could be your u-joint ...its probably worn out, dont let it get too bad, it could be scary...i dont wanna think about it

I called Toyotas 1-800 number, to see if my 4runner was affected by the recall, and they couldn't tell me. Apperantly my 4runner is not on any of their databases, I tought this was wierd so I double checked my VIN# on my truck, and they could not find it on their database. I called to see if my truck was affected by the recall if it would be serviced, since I am in Germany, they said yes, but they can't find my truck. They said that they would get a specialist to look into this, I called on Thursday night, I am still waiting for answer. Oh yeah and yes my truck is US SPECS. Has anything like this happened to any of you??

I have the SSC 18-page document available if someone wants to host it. These identifies who is elligible by VIN number as well as gives clear instructions on what the dealer is supposed to do. According to the document they are supposed to check your alignment. This is the bulletin that is issued to the service departments.

The Campaign Number you need is 50N. This lets toyota know exactly what you are talking about. They are all confused at the customer care centers and dealerships. The will receive the distribution list next week. If they tell you u are not part of the recall tell them to check again or tryt a different dealer.

My queastion is, has anyone taken their truck/4runner in to have it recalled with a lift of any kind? Or asked the dealership if the lift voids the recall? I am afraid to ask...

I don't think a lift will void this recall, unless it is a lift like mine that completely replaced the center link with an aftermarket part. A lift shouldn't make it any harder for the tech to replace the center link, it may however make it harder to do an alignment. I guess it's possible they may replace the center link for you then claim they can't set the alignment within specs because of your aftermarket lift. They could also claim (and rightfully so) that they can't set the alignment within specs because of your rusted or frozen adjustment cam bolts or your rusted or frozen tie rod adjusters. Working on the steering components of a 15 year old truck could be like opening a can of worms, especially if the truck has been driven in the rust belt for 15 years. I can envision all new front-end components (tie rods, ball joints, control arm bushings, adjustment cams, adjustment cam bolts, idler arm, pitman arm) being recommend for some at their own expense. It could turn into a real money maker for the service dept. You get a free center link but need $1000+ worth of front end rebuilding.

I heard that supposedly 7 relay rods have failed out of nearly one million trucks. Before you bash Toyota you should be thanking them for taking such good care of us. If GM, Ford, or Dodge did the same they'd go bankrupt. About 500 people need to have died before any of them will consider issuing a recall. With Toyota it takes some guy with 38" super swampers snapping his relay rod in the mall parking lot and one million vehicles get recalled for an updated part. Thank you Toyota for recalling my truck even though it has been in service for 16 years and 11 months. You guys rule.
