I am in the process of a clutch job on my 89 4runner 3.0 and I have the flywheel off but I was wondering if I should replace the rear main seal while I have a good shot at it? It looks fine and its not leaking at all. I would be pretty upset if I put it in wrong and it leaked but I guess I would also kick myself if this one started leaking in a few thousand miles.

Alright, fine. You guys convinced me too. I happen to be in the same boat and was wondering the same. Guess I better go pick one up. My clutch shouldn't be here for a day or two anyway, so I'd best take care of it now too.

I do it every time the trans is out...

Really dumb move if you don't do it during a clutch change. Clean the crank surface really good with brake cleaner and put a light coat of grease on the seal.

I use STP oil treatment on the seal. Stickiest damn lubricant I've found!

Hell, replace the front seal on the trans too. I replaced my clutch last year and now the front seal on the trans is leaking

Oh well, what can you expect from a 24 year old seal with 200K miles.

Now this is BY FAR the best analogy to explain WHY you should do the rear main seal while you're doing your clutch, that I have EVER HEARD.

I would definately do the rear main if I were you.

Well I got the seal and dam when did they go up to 28 bucks! Oh well Im off to put it in. Thanks for all the advice guys!
