Should I Fix It?

Hey, Just bought my first Toyota,.... got rid of a blazer for it... anyways, had it for about 2 weeks or so and the 5th cylinder blew... fixing it is way beyond my small mechanic knowledge...the mechanic says its a rebuild at about $7500, its got 297k on it... is it worth doing a full rebuild.. or should i risk just fixing the one cylinder?

please help... i want this truck to work

you might do a motor swap but i don't know what year or engine you have if its the 22re than just have the cylinder rebuilt if its a 3.0v6 than a motor swap to either a 3.4toyota v6 or a 4.3chevy v6

that was is way too much for a motor swap. Was it a dealer price? at most maybe 2500 for a newer engine. look into a rebuild kit from engnbldr or even lc engineering it's definitely worth the learning experience

$7500 is extreme for a rebuild... so by those numbers, it is not worth doing a rebuild.

Get some other mechanic's opinions in your area. Could you also define "5th cylinder blew" please? Is that your opinion or the mechanics?
  • If you love the 4Runner, swapping in a 3.4 is the best thing to do.
  • If you like the 4Runner, swapping in a 3.0 in good condition is the best thing to do.
  • If you can't do either of the above yourself, and have to pay for labor, then just driving the 4Runner as it is and shopping for a new one is the best thing to do.

Who knows... maybe you'll loose one more cylinder and be down to a 4Banger. Those are way more reliable anyway.

Really when it comes to the inner workings of the engine i don't know much... the cylinder is only putting out 30 lbs of pressure on a wet test... and can someone tell me more about this 3.4? if its better i might look into it.

Get a friend and pull the motor. Take it to a shop and have it overhauled. Contact Enginebuilder for the costs of a rebuild kit to keep the shop honest. Have the shop install the timing belt and new oil and water pump. With a good mechanic friend, you 2 can do it for less than $2000, maybe closer to $1500 if the shop can just install new rings and knurl the pistons. Obviously, mark everything that is disconnected and take lots of photos.
