in to the shop

heard a belt squeeling, then saw smoke from under the hood
pull over and it seems to be coming out of a few areas, near the radiator, maybe alternator? the belt wound up snaping and everytime i start her smoke
so i get a tow truck
take it to the shop
cuz i dont have a garage, im a student, in an apartment, dont get to take much more of a look
drop her off the guy asks if it starts i say "yes but with alot of smoke from the compartmnet" he goes
"but she starts?"
"yes but idk what the problem is sooo"
and he goes out side and drives it to the lot across the street for storage...
now im wishing i had somewhere else to take it
but my 5 miles were up w/ the tow truck
and im stranded
damn

You need to figure out what bearing froze up first. Also figure out what belt broke. There should be three. One for the AC, one for PS and one for alternator.

If it's just a bearing/ pulley that froze, you should be able to replace that pretty easily. If the fan clutch froze, a local junkyard may have a new fan assembly which again is relatively easy to replace.

Now... if the belt you are refering to that broke was your timing belt... that's another story. Still fixable though, but a garage would help.

Out of curiousity, would it start if the timing belt broke? Sounds a bit steep unless it is the timing belt, and even still...uggghhhhh.

No, the truck would not run with a snapped timing belt.
It just turns over.

What he said. ^^^

But what I don't get is that if he snapped an accessory belt... why the truck would no longer run, and would have to be towed.

Sounds like you just need two new belts and a fan clutch assembly to me.

Yeah but if he ran it too long without a fan, he may have bigger problems.

I'd start by replacing the defunct parts and see what happens from there.

Sounds like he just overheated it, he said he stopped right away and had it towed... as long as he goes no great distance he should have to worry about warping the heads or anything...
The squealing was probably from the power steering pump or one of the idler pulleys... he might need a new fan clutch too but what an opportunity to install an elec. fan!...
The basic part replacements [belts/fan clutch] are not too hard just a PITA...
don't forget to change the rad. coolant...
