Runs rough on start up...
Just got back from Fl w/ my 94 t4r (3.o 5spd) now 176k mi, averaging about 18 mpg. The trip was about 2800 miles round trip and the truck used 4 qts of castrol gtx 10w 40, but no anti-freeze. The oil pressure was excellent (by means of a stock gauge) and the temp was right in the middle. The biggest prob I've been having is that when I start it up is runs really rough until 2000 rpm then it smooths out until I let off the gas then it starts up again. This contiues for about 1 minute then all is well. Where do you recommend I start w/ this problem? Do you guys think its a clogged fuel injector (used injector cleaner w/ not much improvement) or is this the sign of the begining of the end of my 3.0? I love the truck and do not want to get a newer one (besides I just put my OME lift stuff and manual hubs on it). Thanks in advance--ROB

4qts is a lot!!! for only 2,800 miles. Did you notice any smoke on start up? Sounds like some excessively leaking valve stems, given everything you're describing. Hypothetically, the rough start up could be from oil leaking past the valves into the combustion chambers and it smooths out once the oil has burned off. Have a look at your spark plugs and post what you see.
