Use a socket and ratchet. I think it's a 27 or 30 mm plug.

I take it your not talking about a toyota, but my dodge had just a rubber plug in it for the fill plug, just push it back in and it should go in.

Are you talking about the vent on the top of the diff?
The fill plug should be 2/3 of the way up on the back of the pumpkin, looking at the diff from the back of the truck. Fill it till it comes out the hole and your good to go.

yeah the fill plug is the hex one on the back, the drain is the hex one on the bottom of the casing. If you're trying to remove the little rubber thing on the drivers side top thats the diff breather

That's the diff breather.
search here on diff breather then replace it. As others have said, the filler hole is about half way up from bottom.

Do yourself a favor and buy a manual before you break something or check the owner's manual for your vehicle, if you have one. It sounds like you are really lost as to what is what on your differential and you need to know what is what before you start unbolting things.

Top left is the diff breather.
Middle hex head is the fill plug (towards the right side of the diff)
Lower left hex head is the drain plug (bottom on the left side of the diff)

I replaced mine w/ socket head plugs that use a 10mm, much easier to r/r.

Good luck.

Nah, not stupid, just a bit lost. Better to ask questions and find out than screw something up cause you won't ask.

I got them on my website on the "differential" page. I'd be glad to hook you up with some...for the diffs, tranny, just look at the descriptions on the website page.
