Really odd 4 wheel drive issue.....
Ok s I could really use any help I can get at this point. I just bought a used 1992 toyota pickup, its a 5 speed, 4x4, 22r motor. I put it in 4 hi the other day because there was a ton of snow on the streets, ( it was blowing snow I would say had about 4 inches on the street and maybe a foot every where else.) The truck was really bouncy and did not want to excellerate past about 35mph. Whe I pulled up to a stop light I let in the clutch and took the transmission out of gear and it stopped like I was pressing the brakes, not hard mind you but enough where I noticed. Also I had stopped on a minor incline and it didnt roll backwards at all.... So I put it in 2 wheel and drove home. I have put the front end in the air and both axles and the front driveshaft turn when the truck is in neutral and in 2wheel drive. When I put it in 4 wheel or put the transfer case in neutral I cant turn it, it attempts to turn the rear driveshaft. Nothing seems loose or worn out that I can see. So I am wondering if I have different sized gears front to back or is my tcase shot? Any ideas would be really helpful!!

My first thought was different gears front and back. Do you have locking hubs, or the ADD system? If ADD, you'll have hub plates that lock the wheels to the CV axles all the time, thus your CV axles will turn when, even when in 2wd. If you have ADD, and the front driveshaft is turning in 2wd, you have a problem with the ADD actuator being stuck in the "locked" position. You can manually apply vacuum to 1 or the 2 VSVs on the passenger fender to lock and unlock the front end. That's neither here nor there, just some info you can use to start your search
Of course, your next course of action should be turning the tires and counting the driveshaft revolutions to determine your differenital gear ratio for the front and rear. You can search and find that too, should be easy enough to find.

I'd try I bolting other the front or rear driveshaft then turning the wheels to see if its free or still binding. That can eliminate the transfer case

Ya no auto hubs on it. I tried the axles with the driveshafts off so it looks like I am going to be counting rotations. I will let you know what I find!

I had the same "braking" issue but with a very different solution.
My rear axles seals broke and while fixing it, replaced a bad bearing as well as refilled the differential fluids. I also greased all the U-joints and others joints along the entire system. After both of those, it runs just fine in 4WD.
I'd try this first since it's way easy to do. The lubrication points are recommended every 1-2 years per Toyota. If your differential fluid is low, you could ruin the t-case. I did not have the bouncing issue though so this may or may not fix that issue but helped clear up the "braking" issue.

Mine has always had the rear hop a little in 4wd over 50. Idk if it has different gears or what. I wouldn't think so because its stock. All u joints are good and has brand new tires.

Ok so its different gears.... Front axle is running 4.30 from an automatic truck and the rear is the stock 4.10. So I am going to order up a new front and rear gear set. Thinking of going to 4.56 as I am not planing on running tires bigger then 31". any other ideas on gear ratio? Want to make sure that I only do this once and get the best ratio in the axles.

If you can, i would find a 4runner that you can get the rear third and front diff out of. If i have my facts correct, a 2nd gen V6 4runner with an auto has 4.88's and a 5 speed has 4.56's. However, the 4.88's are not capable of being regeared.

If you don't know how to correctly set up a differential, you probably shouldn't try it without help from someone who knows what they are doing. No offense, but I would have torn my engine apart to fix it, but I wouldn't dream of trying to set up gears.
Just be patient and search for the gears you want in a used set up. It could save you a very expensive mistake.

A friend of mine is a mechanic and knows what hes doing with setting up new gears so I am going to have him help me out. Thanks for all the great input guys I will post my end results and maybe a walk through of the install.

ok so I got it done...... Wasnt pretty and took me a while but everything is setup perfectly!! Just took patience and a little digging through resources to make sure it got done right.
