Ready to execute my engine!!!
OK so over the last couple of months:
discovered that my 22re was actually a pre-84 22r. (bought two brand new heads to figure that out).
replaced timing chain.
replaced radiator.
STILL OVERHEATING, and when I picked it up from my mechanics place it was running fine, then died all of a sudden and wouldn't restart for 30 minutes. Got it restarted, drove it halfway back to mechanics house. Had to wait 20 minutes for cool down, drove rest of the way to mechanics house.
water pump is fine.
My mechanic has the head taken off (again) to track down the problem.
Anyone have any other ideas?????????????????????

Just be sure that he put the gaskets on the right sides. It sound to me like he might have them mixed up, and my be blocking the water passages. Sounds crazy, but it can happend.

I considered that, but what's wierd is that this problem was happening (albeit, not as severly) before the timing chain broke. I couldn't track it down then. I tried replacing the t-stat, that didn't help either.

check your fan clutch, make sure its working correctly.
i would also remove the lower radiator hose and rinse out your radiator, you can also remove the thermostat and to the same for the engine.

Radiator is BRAND NEW. But I didn't think of checking the fan clutch. We'll have to give that a shot. The main reason the problem is so baffling is that my mechanic worked for Toyota for twenty-some odd years and he can't seem to figure out the problem.

I think you may be on to something. Or, I could just sell the thing as is and buy one that's already had all the work done to it. It would be kind of like this

How new are the hoses? I once had a radiator hose that kept collapsing in on itself when the rpms would be constant on the freeway. Found out later that I installed the wrong type of hose. it just stopped water flow completely.

Now that is something cheap that I haven't ruled out, checking all the hoses. I do know that when I took it to the stealership they suggested replacing all the hoses for the cooling system. I didn't think it would make that big of a difference as long as the cooling system had enough pressure, which it seems to have.
Even after the overheating problem is fixed, I still have to figure out why the engine stalled when it overheated. That doesn't seem normal.
What would running without the t-stat do/prove????

it would either prove the t-stat is the problem if it doesnt overheat, or it would prove the t-stat isnt the only problem if it still does it. it doesnt rule out the T-stat, it will prove it IS the t-stat, or it might be the t-stat. lol

i had a clogged NEW radiator.
figured it out w/ it removed and noticed how slow it flowed out
