pulling timing belt gear off crank? 3VZE
Hey all, got a 1988 Toyota pickup with the 3VZE engine, been trying to fix an oil leak, first thought it was the oil pan, so re sealed it, slowed it down but still leaks pretty bad. After some cleaning and looking it looks like the front main seal is leaking. I've replaced the timing belt on it before so I had no trouble getting to that point, but when it came time to remove the pulley/gear that drives the timing belt from the crank, I'm stuck... From what I can tell from the lame manual I have, it's pressed on. But I don't have a puller slim enough to fit between the back of the gear and the front cover, is there a special tool that I can make/get or does anyone know any tricks?
Thanks in advance...
Thanks in advance...

I kinda tried that a little bit when I was working on it before, will have to get a bent screwdriver or something and try again, but just to make sure. This is the right way to go about changing that front seal right?

Problems arise when rust gets involved, it becomes a bitch.
If prying not work I would spray it with good penetrant and let it soak for a while, then tap it around with brass hammer to brake bond, work it loose.
If you have REAL, REAL problem you would have to drill two holes into the pulley opposite to each other and tap them to alow ballancer type puller to be used (Toyota recognised this as a problem and newer motor come with holes drilled and tapped in t-belr pullers..)

Guess I'll have to try drilling the stupid pulley, picked up a puller that wouldn't fit but made some new fingers from scrap steel and a couple washers to stuff behind it. Just broke the weld's on the washer's, tried prying on it like crazy, no movement... So I'll try drilling/tapping them next I guess. Thanks for all your input guys.

Use Heat, too.
If you hit it with a hair dryer, the gear will expand (slightly, but often that is enough).
The same principle also works for putting the cam bolts and drive shaft pully bolts on if you don't have an impact gun, or can't get on in place. I put my bolts in the freezer for a couple of hours and they cinch down as tight as can be.
