I am brainstorming 3.0 to a 22RE engine swap. What I like to know is has anyone every done this?

Also, (and I know this is crazy), every heard of someone putting a 22RE in a Jeep (CJ5 or CJ7)?

Have not purchased either vehicle...just brainstorming this out before putting any money down.

Never heard of someone sticking one in a jeep. Maybe a 2f or 3f inline 6? but not the 22re..

Plenty have done the swap into Samurais tho =)


Most do a 3.0 -> 3.4 swap.

id say just make sure you get a hold of the ecu and the harness. and the wiring is going to probably be a chore. If u hate the 3.slow though it will likely be worth it.

If you already have the 3.0, it would be easier to swap in a 3.4. It would give you better power, drivability and milage. See my sig - it's what I did, and I'm VERY satisfied with it!

If you are determined to swap a 22re, you will not only need the engine and ECU, but a compatible transmission and transfer case, as well. Motor mounts will have to be redone, ect. You will have a stout little engine, but it will have less power than the 3.0.

I have a 92 ex cab 4x4 with the 3.0 bad head gaskets. Wanted to do the same swap, i have everything to do it but I am going to use a carb motor.It would be way easier that way, just throw a weber on and go. If you do this swap before me post how it went or just IM me and let me know. good luck to ya.

I posted about this earlier and everyone told me I was nuts for going to a smaller engine. I'm considering a 22re Turbo to make moderate horsepower with still good gas mileage. That 3.4 must get some damn good gas mileage to do better than a 22re. I thought a fresh 22re would take you 25mpg+ ? Gotta weigh the pricing too though: A 3.4 swap is an easy 4-5grand versus a 2-3grand 22re swap

yea well, my 22re at last check was gettin 20.6 mpg. thats with about equal highway and city, but u also gotta factor into that equation the fact that im a teen driver, soooo. but i have no idea what the 3.4 gets with mpg. i believe its actually close to the same as im gettin. btw, my engine has less than 100 grand miles on it, but its a 94', so its old and sat a lot before i got it.

I think the 3.4 getting better mileage than a 3.0 is an honest farce.

For example I know what my buddy gets and I don't get THAT much worse gas mileage than him, maybe .5-1 MPG and I have a canopy, he doesn't (so say an extra 100-150 pounds there) and my truck also weighs about 400 pounds more than his, on top of the fact I have a 4.56 rear end, he has a 4.30 or 4.10 if I'm not mistaken.

i was getting 18-19 mpg with a heavy foot in my runner with 3.4 5spd, my old truck with 3.0 5spd...well lets just say not close.

Yeah I know the 3.4 is better than the 3.0 but I thought someone said the 3.4 is better mpg than a good ol 22re.

ya i doubt that. my 22re got me great mpg but it was 2wd(alot less weight and parts to turn)

man i loved my old 2wd 22re. it was a zippy little thing and great millage too. if you're sick of lame millage with poor power, than i guess i'd be a good swap. i personally love the sound of my v6 and i wouldn't ditch it for anything less than a v8. that's just me tho, i like to stand by what i've got!!
