New Speakers in 95 runner

So I'm going to be putting in new speakers in the 95 runner. Just wondering what kind of job it is in putting the in the dash. (I'm just replacing the dash speakers) Ang tips or what I should watch out for?

Not too familiar with the 95s but if they are the same as the 94's it schould'nt be too big a deal... if like the 94s the pass. side will require dropping the glove box so you might want to empty it first... the drivers side is relatively easy to get to... if you are reusing the stock wiring it ought to be a simple plug and play switch...
one thing yota uses an odd size/shape basket in the front if you are swapping in a standard 4" round you may need to trim the corners of the metal frame with some metal snips... just be careful and use the ones you pull out as a template and you should be fine...

It should not be very hard to fit 4"x6"s vertically in there, just modify the backing plate on the speaker a bit.

Actually fitting 4x6s in there would be a serious pain in the tushie and true round speakers give you a better sound anyways...

so far as the triming goes it is far easier to trim the edge of the steel rim than to try to trim the plastic housing...

so far as speaker to get it all depends on your taste and budget...
Boston Accoustic are about the best you can get IMO for true clean concert like sound for most music [jazz/classical/rock/etc.] but they are expensive and not very easy to find... MTX make a nice speaker amd they have several different lines to choose from some better some worse...
the best thing to do would be to go to a few different car audio shops [if you can] and audition a few different ones with a cd of your own fav. music try to use a head unit as close to the one in your truck as you can and then pick the speakers you like best... and don't be afraid to ask about buying the demo speakers as long as they are'nt blown [which they shoul'nt be haha] you can sometimes really stretch your audio dollar this way...

cheers aviator

I put some Pioneer 4 inch speakers in my dads 91 which has the same spots as your Runner I think. They sound good but you can expect them to have any bass at all just highs. And Aviator, what do you fly? I'm not trying to steal a thread I'm just wondering as I have a PA-11 Cub on floats.

Do you really think it would be that hard? Its only an inch longer on each side. I went out and meausured my 91 and it looks like they will fit.

Oh well... nevermind

JBL is a really good brand also.

My dad's been a CFI for 27 years and built a RV-4 and participated in 6 other RV builds. Plus all the others weve owned over the years.

I will add my 2 cents in here -

I know that 4x6's would fit if you made a new baffle to mount it to(I made one myself). The problem you have is that the speaker would be outputting the sound right into the piece of plastic and it will a) rattle and b) sound like crap.

Here is what I have done... (these are 4.5" drivers)

I don't have any shots of the interior trim in place right now, but you can see the red speaker baskets through but everything is nice and tight.

I would stick with a round speaker for sound quality(I don't have the knowledge to argue why, but it's what I prefer)

Actually, my opinion is (if you want to spend the money) get a set of kicks made, install a decent component set, and disconnect the dash speakers. Bumpin' Yota will be making mine pretty soon. I have a 3 way set is why I have the midrange in the dash.

BTW, this is in a 95 4runner as well.

Kat

Take the time and forget about the dash spot... there are no good speakers in that size... do a easy custom install in the doors...

best and only photo I have

I put the crossover in the OEM speaker location...

ah64 - I like your setup with the x-overs in the dash locations - wish i would have thought of that, mine are under the front seats.

I was to chicken$%^& to cut the door panels. I also could not find a whiole lot of info about what was behind the doors(ie windows, tracks, etc)

Thanks...

Those are power windows, and there was plenty of room for the 6. The tweeter just mounts in the MDF, so you dont have to drill 2 holes.

Go to this thread. It is what I did. Crutchfield has a special on the Polk Audio speakers. Very clear and can handle very good power. You are talking about 4" speakers so you are not going to get bass out of them like 6.5s, but even 6.5 don't put out earth shattering bass either. If you are looking for something that is a quick and dirty with good quality, then get good quality 4" and drop them in the stock location. It will take all of an hour to do it. I have pics of mine speakers and set up to help you along.

They even have the Polks on sale right now. $50

Actually I used to get quite reasonable bass out of the mtx road thunder? (yellow label) 4" I had in my old 87.. it was'nt ground shaking but it did they did the job ok...

as to what aircraft I fly I used to fly a PA-31-310 [navajo] and C-310 but that firm went belly up... I've done a ground school on the PA-31T [cheyenne] and am starting one on a C-208 while I look for my next flying job... had an offer to come down to the states to fly a Lear and a Falcon but I have to wait while the company firms up the immigration crap...

I run 4" Kickers in the front, I got the right hand side to fit fine and dandy with no problems, but the drivers side has a little bit of plastic around the steering column IIRC that may make the fit a big PITA, I had to use a mini grinder to trim down that plastic, but once I did that it fit like a charm and the sound owns in the cab. I'm running those with a 300w sub behind the passenger seat. I still need to do the rear speakers.

What is the stock size for the front dash speakers?
Im running the stockers up front and they snap, crackle and pop all day long.
Time for replacment!!
I was looking at 4" speakers at store today, thought they would fit, but since I would not be installing them im not sure if they would work (dont know if the store would cut up the dash so they would fit)
