MPG on a trip
Just did 600 miles in my 1992 pickup 4x4 single cab 5speed 22re and got an average of 15.5mpg going through mountains and the high plains (Las Cruces NM to Clovis NM and back). This was with my RM250 dirt bike, gear, loading ramp, and weekend bag in the bed. Motor is stock on a fresh rebuild (95,027miles on chassis, and 4,345miles on motor) with .30 pistons. Was very pleased since this was my first trip with this truck. I bought it back in August. Like i said motor is all stock, 31 in A/T tires, and 4.11 gears. Only gripe I have is it is VERY lacking in power when climbing uphill! Went from 5th gear at 70mph to 45mph in 3rd gear. Any suggestions as how to gain more power/lose less mph without sacrificing to much on the mpg side? I know with performance you sacrifice mpg but want to be able to meet somewhere in the middle.

I have the same problem truck cruise's great but try point it up any kind of hill and you end in 3rd gear revving it up or 4th gear bogging it down. All the bolt on's in the world will only give you like a 4mph gain if your lucky. Have to go internal to see any kind of real results. Or a motor swap like many people will tell you.

Seems that most people who get an ENGNBLDR performance head and cam see an increase in power and mpg... Also, either regearing for larger tires or going back to stock size tire will help.
15.5 is interesting to me. I like to camp in the summer; my friends and I usually take my 4Runner ('95, 22re 5spd) and I get 18-22mpg with 3-4 of us, our camping gear- whether its in the cargo area or on the roof rack. There are quite a few large mountain passes wherever I go camping, so its pretty comparable to your trip. But I have a lift, 33x12.5 tires and stock 4.10 gears....

31s-especially on steel wheels-aren't helping. 225s or 235s would make a pretty big difference, on aluminum rims even more. I always ran smaller tires in the winter, and the truck got much peppier as a result.

Agreed, you might need to do some tinkering.
I pulled up a 7% grade with two dirt bikes and a load of gear in the bed of my 88 4X4 22re stock gears & tires going 55MPH in 3rd ~3600RPM. I could have gone faster but I didn't want to wind it out too much.

Its a 22 RE. Thats like having 4 angry squirrels pull you up a hill. I usually try and give mine a few energy drinks before a trip.. Seems to help...
In all seriousness though. I just deal with mine. There is no replacement for displacement. I cant think of anything within a reasonable budget other than dropping tire size to help with that. Otherwise you are looking at either re-gearing or a motor swap (I am looking into a 7mgte personally).

thanks to everyone for their input! Seems I may like this forum after all...lol I am not as worried about the mpg as much as being able to tow stuff. I travel alot (personal and business) and just want a little bit more spunk... I am used to fast low cars. sounds like the goal is 4.88's, intake manifold, bigger throttle body, intake, cam, head work, header, and exhaust.

Good link, very informative, but if im going to spend that kinda cash for a stock motor I will just find a complete truck and drive it... seems to be about a $6000 swap and for that i can go to LCE engineering and buy a stage 3 long block and all need parts and it be a brand new motor
