hey, i'm looking for a toyota 22re.
I got one to buy with just under 200k on it for 500 bucks with tranny.
is that a good deal?
is it worth it to buy a 22re with that many kms on it.
if i could get a general idea of how many people have on theirs that would be great.

Someone on here has his avatar picture of his ODO as 333,333 on his 22re.
Theres members here with 250k + on their original.
Granted some are in need or a rebuild, while others might just be burning oil at that point.

It really depends on the shape of body/interior..
I would throw out the 500 for a project vehicle.
Have you driven it..Or even heard the engine run ?


EDIT: are you just trying to buy engine and tranny, or a whole vehicle ?

Is there any way you can here it run? With out hearing it run you will have no clue if there are any problems! 500 bucks itent to bad! But I would be kinda weary if its 200k on it! Just my 2 cents I had 171,ooo on my last one when it went bad! It all depends on how well it was taken care of!!

My 22RE has just under 200K, and I don't anticipate any issues in the near future. It has a new head, but I think that is from the timing chain snapping once on a previous owner (I found guides in the oil pan). It also broke once on me because the idiot PO didn't properly install the chain. The oil was dirty and the coolant was basically all water. What I'm getting at is that is was poorly maintained and its still a good engine- they're tough.

Providing the timing chain is done every 100K or so, the engine should be fine. I'd check compression. The bottom ends are supposed to last forever.

If the clutch works and the tranny is in decent condition, that's a great deal.

Your taking a risk buying any used motor. Theres no way to tell what condition its in without it setup to be run.

Just have to make a judgement call. Maybe get something in writing stating its in working order and runs and theres nothing wrong with it. ?

mine ran beautifully until the HG blew, just over 300,000 miles on the original motor. im half tempted to have a buddy put a new gasket in until i get the cash to rebuild it. and the previous owner told me he changed the oil twice a year(after i bought it). so after being taken care of by the P.O. horribly, (about 120,000 miles) i got it and drove it another 170,000 miles. go figure. its a tough motor.

I have 3 trucks with all over 420k km on them and they all run great. You will not find a better 4 cylinder engine out there for longevity.

Wow, that is amazing.

When i first got my yota and saw it had 390,000km i was kinda like. ah itll last a while but il have to replace tones of things or rebuild down the road. So far ive been driving the truck for 3 months and put on 4000km and not even one single problem so far.... Just burns a bit of oil, but i cant complain

I have 234k on mine. Bought it for $1000. A month after I got it it needed a head gasket. Seems to be a very reliable engine. It's easy to work on, too, which is a plus over other modern cars.

ya, I am just buying an engine. I am getting a 4runner with a blown engine, the person who owned it ran it out of oil. The engine with 200k on it is from an engine swap, so it hasn't been taken out because it doesn't run well, it's because the person wanted a bigger engine. Does it sound like a good deal, or should I look around for something with a few less km's on it?

Once you fix the timing chain guides (put steel ones in) the only problem that can happen are head gaskets. This is what you get with alum heads on steel blocks. I have never done one twice though. And if you watch your gauges then you will not cause any damage to your engine.

The rest of the engine is bullet proof. Buy the engine, change the timing chain and guides (like 80 bucks from engblder and a days work) and you will get another 100k out of that engine.

Mine's sitting at 170,000 and getting better everytime I put a little time and of coarse coin into it. No major problems yet. Had the timing chain redone once which isn't cheap unless you do it yourself but it runs great now with only possibly a sticky egr valve.
