it might be a CV issue.. that would explain why only the right wheel spins... check your CVs

OK - Let me see if I get this right ('cuz it sounds just like a problem I had recently)
no sound in 2WD with the hubs unlocked Sound in 2WD with the hubs locked no sound in 4WD with the hubs locked If that's true, what it was in my case was a dry spindle bushing. "Toyota MDT tech" described a tool you could build to lube them, or pull the CV and do it (that's what I ended up doing). What kind of hubs? (AISIN - red dial, Warn - gold dial, Superwinch - blue dial)

I second the spindle bushings

If the hub is broken your sound makes sense. With the hub not engagted, everything is normal. You lock the hub in 2wd and suddenly there's parts inside the hub that try to grab the cv axle, but it makes all the sounds since it's broken. In 4wd, the sound goes away because the cv axle is turning with the hub.
