manual hub not fully releasing CV axle

Hi, just looking for a few expert opinions here. (Hey, this is my first post here-haha!)

I just installed Warn hubs on a '94 3.0 runner (4WD of course) with 88K miles and the install was easy enough to do. The passenger side hub will release the CV fully so it doesn't turn with the wheel, but the driver's side doesn't. The CV still turns with the driver's side wheel, but i'm sure it isn't the manual hub itself since I can grab the CV to stop it from turning, and there isn't any kind of ratcheting or grinding of any splined hub parts. Just feels like the CV doesn't turn as freely as the passenger side in unlocked mode.

Oh yeah, I did notice when the hubs were off that the driveshaft was kind of loose inside the steering knuckle. I heard that the bushings inside the spindle wear out kind of fast, so I'm thinking maybe they are the culprit somehow. Replacing those is kind of a major job, just want your thoughts before I dismantle everything only to find out they are fine. Thanks!

welcome to yotatech! It's nice to see more people from around here joining. When you changed your hubs, did it look like there was any grease on the axle and bearings?

Yes, there actually was quite a bit on the axle, but not more than what I would have expected. They were repacked recently BTW(not by me), if that makes any difference. Makes me wonder if something wasn't put together right, though the spindle bushings are still my primary suspect.

I just rebuilt both sides on my 87 with all new bearings and seals. Not hard, just takes some time.

Did you replace auto or ADD hubs with the Warns?

The manual hub dials should take little effort to turn under normal conditions. If one side is binding you need to R/R ASAP!

Is the spring sprung?

I had the same problem on my '86 when I changed the axles Fall of '05. The spring in one of the manual hubs was broke and would not allow the axle to disengage. I bought a new one. Slowly, ever so slowly I am restoring the '86 4Runner.

Okay, thanks for the replies! I checked out the manual hubs themselves and they engage and disengage properly, so it's gotta be something to do with the CV axle itself. I think i'm going to take a wait and see approach to it, maybe whatever's binding will eventually work itself loose, for better or worse
