main bearing noise
nice site just joined..so i need some advice..I resently traded for a really nice 86 toyota 4x4 that has a "knock" in bottom end for engine...The sound can be heard when starting & if you press the gas can be heard on decel of engine as it idles back down...I don't have any idea how many miles are on it. the question is would it be wise to have someone replace the main bearings & rod bearings to try to stop the knock or should I start saving for an engine? this is just going to be a hunting toy...any help would be greatful..

the main and rod bearings can be replaced with the engine in the truck, as long as the bearing journals aren't damaged. all you have to do is get the oil pan out of the way. but before you do so, do a compression check and see how the cylinder's are doing. if the compression is low, it may be better to replace the engine or do a full rebuild on yours.
if you're going to be in there doing the bearings, I'd recommend replacing the timing chain and guides also as a preventive measure.
