license plate light removal

ok, so ive been searching, and either im not typing it right or the site just doesnt like me, but both of my license plate lights are out. ive tried what the haynes manual says, to pull the light straight out, but its not budging. what gives? yes ive removed the screws from the assembly holding it to the body, i cant get the lens/light to seperate from each other.

Are they at all loose? If so, wiggle them, they should wiggle loose towards the centre.

Pull them out, I don't understand what the problem is. If they are stuck pull harder.

Did you ever get them out? I had the same problem a couple weeks ago, but I don't remember it clearly enough to help out. Once you get it off there, I think it becomes clear what the sticking point was... but if I remember correctly, the solution really was, "Just pull harder."

they get rusted together

Yeah I know - plastic and metal dont rust together... but it gets stuck.
At least the 4Runner ones do - I know the truck ones are different...

Do you even have to have those lights? Mine have been out for like 8 years and I've never even thought about replacing them.

Some states require you have lights to light up your licence plate. Kind of a moot point since headlights cause the plate to light up anyways...

One of mine just burnt out, I guess I will have to change them soon aswell.

I've been pulled over for no plate lights. It's a lame reason but the possibility of being pulled over is there without license plate lights.

x2 on the being pulled over for the lic. plate light being out. He had me get out of my vehicle and look at it, when I got back there it was on. I told him that, then he asked me if he could search my vehicle (harassment?). I told him go ahead. Then after 3 minutes of a stare down, he said get back in and take off.

Well, I doubt it's gonna happen to me. Seeing as how it's been so long. I've been pulled over several times at night and never had a cop mention not having those lights.

What about people who have their plates elsewhere? Or dealer tags?

I agree that it's kinda stupid since headlights shine on the plate anyway.

what if someone backs into your rig in a parkinglot, then decides not to stop and asses the damage? good luck getting their plate number with no lights.

i've been pulled over for them being out. on my '94, you have to twist the lenses, then pull down. it can be a PITA, but they came out.
