kind of slow

just bought a 87 22r. It has 31's o it and the gear spacing seems to be wide. 5th gear is only for 70mph and up! there is no way that i can crawl in first. Do you guys think i need to put a different gear in the rear?? like a 4.56? thanks

31's are the limit for the 4;10 gears. i think your 4:56's are good if you are going to stay at 31's to 33's, but 33's would work with 4:88's. there is a gear calculator somewhere on here that will help you. you could drop a 4:70 low gear in your t-case. and keep the 4:10's

So 4:10's are stock? Each gear seems so long. Like the whole trans needs to be shortened. Or is that because i have a 22r? I just have to slip the clutch too much to take off. Care to explain about that 4:70 low gear or maybe direct me to a link that will? thanks!

First off, you can't regear just the rear. You'd have to do both diffs if you ever plan on using 4wd.

Second, I drive a 22re 5spd 4rnr and I can "crawl" plenty well. (Though, I don't "crawl"....I just have to get in and out of my driveway ) And clutching is no problem at all even living where I do....in the Ozarks. I can easily do 50 on up on flat stretches. Sometimes 45....if it's real flat. I'm usually in 4th for those speeds, though, with all the hills around here. So, I really don't see how you can't get the same with your vehicle with the same tires and engine.

Third, given what I've said, I'd have to say you have a power issue at the engine side of things if you can't push 31's easily. For "crawling", though, are you trying to crawl in low 4wd or high?

BTW, 4.10's would be stock on yours. It is on mine, too.

Wait...wait...wait. Back up a minute, here. Do you even have a 4wd? If not, that would explain part of it. If so, I'm wondering if someone swapped the gears out.....if you don't have any engine power issues.

Yea, 5th gear is not gonna be very useful with 4.10s and 31's. Mostly only on flat ground. But, most cruising is supposed to be at a relatively high rpm. I find 2700-3100 to be about the right area.

4.56 gears will fix it, but it sounds like something isn't right with your motor as well if you can't take off without excessive clutching.

its a 4x4. once i get going it seems fine. its just that initial going from a stop. There are headers on there so i'm not sure if i can do the whole block off plate for the egr. I was trying to look last night but couldn't see anything. Maybe if i take off a heat sheild. Once i'm moving the rest of first through 4 is fine. I do have to rev it out a bit for each gear. I'm also going to replace the fuel filiter.

Its probably the 31's. Do a tune up and see, because it seems like you are TOO slow, even for 31's and stock gears.

I suppose it would be good to know your background? Have you driven toy trucks before? Because they are pretty gutless. If you are used to high power vehicles, these seem like they are awful. They do require a tiny bit of clutch slip to get going, but hardly any at all.

Also, you say you can't "crawl" in first. That is pretty strange. You are in low range, correct?

if the truck came with the 31" option, then it should have 4.56. If it had the standard tires, then it should have 4.10. Tortis was right with his post.

This site should tell you how to identify your ratio:

Here is a calculator:

Thanks for all of the help so far. I am use to something a little faster but its not the lack of pull. Its the clutch slippage. I'd say that it takes 2 or more seconds to let the clutch out. If i let it out all at once then the truck will bog. I've ridden dirt bikes for many years and it seems like super tall gearing. No doubt. because 5th could probally reach 100+. But thats if there was a downhill. anything but flat and i have to go to fourth. I don't have a tach installed yyet but 3rd is good (stops pulling) till 55... i just cruz in 4th. And 5th is super gas saver mode!! I'll check compression this weekend and do a fuel filter. Maybe even valve clearance.

I replaced the plugs and wires. The number 2 cylinder had so much carbon deposits it was crazy. I put two bottles of seafoam and it runs better. With aftermarket headers you don't have a egr..right?

So blistien shocks with new bushings or just go for the ome 800$ kit?

Well, that is a little longer than my clutch, but not much. You can't just dump the clutches on these. You have to goose them a bit. FWIW, my truck has a brand new motor, is running tip top, and is actually over geared for the tires I'm running.
