Unhappy K&n valve / flap stuck open...

Ok,

so we are ib the middle of a major blizzard lots of blowing snow etc. and cold (up to -25 c)

anyway...went to fire up truck yesterday (battery was dead...) went to jump it..found i hadnt fully closed the hood and under the hood was all covered with snow...sigh

anyway, jump started it, went to get gas..everything was fine..come home...let it sit fior a few hours...went out again...would start but quit after 5 secs..
Took off the k&n intake..(filter part) found that the fllap (afm?) was frozen shut....so no air...ok, so i pushed it open...and started it...now it idles..but with a heavy gas smell....

so now its stuck wide open...anything i can do to get if free..(other than waiting for it to warm up in spring.....) would letting it idle warm it up........already tried a bit of carb cleaner..but all i think i did was push it open a bit farther....

91 3vze with a k&n cold air intake among other things

thanks

Paul

Take it off and bring it inside to thaw out maybe? Definitely don't spray it with anything, including carb cleaner or even MAF cleaner. Doing so could damage the electronics inside it. And if it's still real cold out, running the engine will only draw more cold air through it and keep it frozen. Think wind chill factor there.

After letting it thaw out a bit, you might try removing the moisture/condensation from it too. What I do to dehumidify moist electronic components is blow dry them with a hair dryer on low heat. Works wonders, I can't tell you how many cell phones I've saved like that(like the ones that accidentally end up in the washing machine, yeah, we've all done it atleast once).

And yes, if it's stuck wide open, she's gonna run super rich. So smelling the unburnt fuel coming out of the tailpipe goes hand-in-hand with that.

Oh and BTW, you're right, it's an AFM not a MAF. Big difference.

Take the intake inside to thaw and see if that helps.
It's only a couple of hose clamps and a connector.
Got a block heater? Keep it plugged in tonight, it's gonna get cold in Calgary.

You should check out the local Toyota group, Canada Toyota 4wd Association or CT4WDA.com. Check out the forums, weekly show and shines/ coffee nights. Great group. Look forward to seeing ya on there.

Get rid of that K&N. Waste of money & let's HUGE amounts of dirt in your engine.
