just swapped a 3.0 for a 3.0

old 3.0 was toast and would have loved to do a 3.4 or a 4.3 swap but fell into this rebuilt 3.0 for $500 bucks so I was sold and thought it would have been a much easier swap, just pull and put right? WRONG!!!!!

Nothing was the same in hind sight I should have stripped them down to the blocks and put anything that was still working from mine onto the new motor.

Different =
Injector plugs/changed fuel rails
Knock sensor/spliced old one onto my harness
(Should have just changed intakes)
Swapped rear intake packages
had to swap distributors
ac mount lined up 1/2 inch back/had to torch the rear of my mount to fit the new motor
oil pressure plug
and the list goes on

At the moment its in and turns over and starts with starter fluid into the intake but I'm not getting any fuel pressure to the fuel rails, I'm pretty sure the fuel pump has gone out due to inactivity, I'm gonna pull it out of the tank and see if i can free it up if not i guess its back to the parts store

Just thought i'd offer this up for anyone who is thinking about a 3.0 for a 3.0 make sure you check all the electrical connections etc and dont assume because its a 3.0 it will mate perfectly

Not all the veezees were the same. Along with the differences you mentioned above the main one is the use of a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. I believe the split was some time in 92. What year is your new motor? Im doing the same thing you are, putting a 95 engine in a 92.

try to jumper the fuel pump at the diagnostic connecter and see if it runs. Also is your intake pipe on?

I ran into this same issue when I put an 88 3vze in my 94 4runner. I ended up just switching all the electronics from the blown engine onto the freshly rebuilt engine. The coolant piping was different as well (88 engine was from a pickup, my 94 is a 4runner) by the end of it I think I only kept the block and heads from the 88 and used all the other parts from my 94. Even the exhaust manifold came down at a different angle requiring some custom exhaust work to get the 94 exhaust system to mate to the manifold.

Good point about the exhaust, had I caught it I would have swapped manifolds and not had a problem now I'm stuck with manufacturing new exhaust pipe.

The motor I blew was a 95 the rebuilt motor came out of a 90 4runner,

Plan on trying to jump the fuel pump today, will post the results as soon as i can.

The older ones had a bigger head bolt...

Too bad they all aren't 14mm... I have done nothing but rag the ever loving wee out of mine, I drift/ power slide with it constantly, powerbraked it... You name it! And it just shrugs it off...

A pop to the jaw to whoever's idea it was to go down on the head bolt...

It's even rumored the 14mm's didn't fall in the recall. So some engineer gets the Douche bag of the decade award for both going to a smaller head bolt, AND using a different head gasket, AT THE SAME TIME...

Put the older one in so maybe it will be an upgrade for me,

I'm in cebtral GA I guess you could say, taylor county, about 40 min south of macon.

We got it fired off and running tonight, new fuel filter and pump and ran muratic acid through the tank, I've never seen so much crap in a gas tank before, no wonder the fuel pump failed.

Only one thing left to do and that is fab up the exaust pipe, good project for tomorrow, wanted to drive it but with no exhaust i didnt want to run it and bend a valve or rod.....

Had a flow master before, I think I'll go with one of those glass packs or cherry bombs that will bolt to the cat that i've gutted.....shhh

Another idea i've been looking at, eliminating the driver side parking light and installing a cold air intake/ram air intake in its place, anyone ever done this before? the light serves no purpose to me and it is convinient to the air box, seems like a no brainer.....

Sounds like something that belongs on a honda civic. No offence. But you would take in water super easy.
It just seems like a bad idea, dont you have alot of deep mud pits down there in georgia?

point taken, it would be great for a highway application but thats not what this is, i figured it would atleast be the same height as the stock intake with the only disadvantge being the stock intake is inside the engine bay.

I'll have to research some snorkel stuff to see how they prevent and filter outside moisture/dust etc...

Just noticed the different angles on the exhaust manifolds from the 88 3v going into my 91. I'm going to swap them soonest, but the new 88 motor just went in. Hope it's not too much of a pain in the ass...

I alsol had to swap most of the electronics, harness, injectors, ect. Hope I will be able to fire it up soon.

Often contemplated, never initiated

Just watch the rain and water crossings... It would be awesome though.

A ram, cold air intake..

And if you're wondering how Safari does it, here ya go.

If you drill a drain plug, you're defeating your purpose.

100% d - u - n...... dun.

Instead of re-maning and fabing exhaust pipe i elected to swap manifolds even though the new motor was in the engine bay. I removed the air cleaner and had a straight shot at it. the only tricky part was prying the cross pipe back far enough to slide the manifolds off and on but there was enough room in there to squeez them around.

drove her around tonight and after about a mile she really opened up, glad to have this project done now to either look for a spool or lincoln lock the rear and go from there.

Good news, when I pulled my old turd 3.0 out to put my new one in I was hoping that it blew a freeze plug so I could rebuild it, I looked and they were all there when the engine came out so I said heck its busted, but I was stripping it down yesterday took the intake off and realized I forgot about those plugs and sure enough it had popped the front freeze plug under the intake, now I've got a block to rebuild and will have an extra for when this one goes out.
