Question I have a problem when I start my new 4Runner

Hey Guys! What's up? I just joined your forum and I am relatively new to working on cars/4Runners soo bare with me if i sound stupid/naive.

Anyways, whenever I go to start my 4runner when it has been sitting for the whole night, it starts up fine. After I drive somewhere then turn it off, come back 15 minutes later then try to start it, it cranks for a while then barely starts. It'll be at a really low RPM (500-700) for a while, then i'll put it into drive, and drive about 1/2 mile then come to an idle and it will idle fine. My truck does leak oil from the valve cover gasket. Is this contributing to the problem? if not, should I have my fuel pump replaced/rebuilt?

i would look at the cold start set up, could be a bad sensor feeding gas to it when it does not need it.

there is a temp sensor on the back of the motor and the injector is up top on passanger side. find the fsm for your rig and u can see what sensor is what.

Start by getting yourself a factory service manual. Then, check normal things like the TPS, and AFM. You can also check the temp sensors as suggested, which often will make it hard to start when warm.

you probably wond find a cold start time switch unless you go to a place where they let you go look. I dont think they know what it is or something. I called around 20 junk yards with no luck. Ended up buying a new one.

Got it from the dealer for like $78 or something. Its a bit high but if thats your problem then its worth it because it will most likely last the life of the truck.

btw guys, just to update, one of my battery cables was sooo badly corroded that it was barely touching the starter. Plus, and this was definitely the biggest issue when starting, a few of my spark plugs were about to fly out of the combustion chamber! One was crossthreaded, and 2 more were just loose. Needless to say, my compression was virtually non-existent. Now, alls i need to do is tackle the valve cover gasket leak...
