No.. it's not.
Mine has 4.10 gears like all other 89 4runners.
Remember there was no 31" tire package for 84-89 4runners or 84-88 trucks... and only 4.10 or 4.30 gears...

Ummm you are incorrect on that one. My friends 88 truck with a 22RE had the 31" tire option and it said it on the door. I don't remember what gears he had though.

So the only difference in the 3rd is the offset pinion? And becasue of that offset pinion they use a thin ring gear(or is it the other way round). Any differences other than that? And does this design offer any advantages, or is it just one of those annoying auto maunfacturer things?

Secondly, once I get my 33's mounted(soon my tires, soon) I want to go to 4.88's. I know where I can get a set of factory 4.88 diffs, but would I be getting better diffs if I regeared my 4.56's to 4.88 using yukon gears(or something simaler)?

the ring gear is thinner resulting in a lot less rotating mass. i think if anything, it lets them uses a bigger pinion gear. it appears much larger than the ones used on aftermarket gear sets.

for all purposes, the carrier is the same as a normal V6 carrier, so it should be lockable.
