Tried asking on the 1984-1985, so I will ask in this section.

I have a 1988 pickup, 2 WD, 22R, 5 speed. The build plate says that I have a W55 transmission, which I assume is original since I have owned the truck since 1989. The transmission is in the pickup as I drive it all the time.

I am thinking of buying another W55. My net search says the W55 has an aluminum case. I found 2 transmissions for sale on craigs list that I think might be W55s, because they look like they have an aluminum case and they don't have the stuff on the back for a transfer case.

Neither seller has the donor vehicle to look at the plate. Neither seller knows if they have a W55. They have asked me what they can look at to see if it is a W55, and I have not clue what to tell them to look for.

The pictures are not very good, but that is all I have.

Searching the net, on some transmissions you count the splines or look for a certain bearing number, and so on. I have found not info on how to ID a W55.

I could look at my installed transmission and these 2 for sale all day long, and not know if they are they same. Anyone know how to ID a W55?

I was going to recommend this page: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ but I don't even see W55 listed on there. Sorry I can't be of more help.

The transmission in the first picture is not for my application. After trading emails the seller says it is for a 4WD and the back of the transmission bolts to a transfer case.

The seller of the transmission in the second picture says I can drive by and look it it. But I do not know what to look for. Well, I guess if I saw 2 shift levers I would know something was not right....

in the 2nd pic, you can tell it is different then the 1st.
it has the trans tailshaft on it where the driveshaft slip yoke goes in (or bolts to the back on a round plate, which you can kind of see in the pic). where as the 1st pic is flat with bolt holes waiting for a transfer case.

2nd pic looks like a 2wd tranny
EDIT: also, usually you can see a serial number plate or part # plate on the trans, check on your vehicle and see if you find it. write it down (all of them, might be a couple different sets of numbers) and take it with you when you go look at the 2nd picture in person

second one is a W55, as long as it is a 5sp. Be sure to test shift it before you buy to verify the number of gears.

the one in the first pic is a W56 4x4 tranny from an 84-88 Truck/84-89 4Runner 4cyl EFI 5spd.

You could also try Wikipedia

Also, just compare yours to theirs. Make sure the shifter is of the same style.

I did hit on Wikipedia during my internet search for W55.

It says the applications for a W55 include "1984-1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD with 22RE(EFI) engine." I have a 22R with carb.

So much for the accuracy of Wikipedia....

does your ID plate say W55? I thought you would have a G series....

It says W55. I bought the 1988 pickup in 1989. I pulled the transmission I forget how many years ago to replace the clutch on my driveway. I think I remove the transmission in 1989 after I bought it, or around 1990.

I do not remember what it looks like. I did not take pictures.

Guess I am going to have to crawl under the truck once I get it up in the air a bit to see if there are markings on the transmission, a serial number, something. Too old for that stuff now....
