Help converting a manual trans to automatic

Hi
I know that some of you may cringe at what I am considering, but I will ask anyway. I have a 1991 4x4 Exc with a 3.0 V-6. It came with a 5-speed and I am interested in converting it to an automatic transmission. My local Pick-N-Pull just got a 1995 4Runner with an auto trans in it. Besides the transmission itself, the ECU, and the pedals, what else will I need to grab? I have been told this truck won't last long and if I am going to do this I better act quick. Thanks in advance for your help.

you might need an auto trans radiator as well. Or at least a really good aftermarket trans cooler. You might want to make sure the transfer case is compatible as well. Maybe the drive-shaft too. look all that info up on 4x4wire. Don't forget the shifter(s) as well.

First a mri to see if there is a brain,second the gears most likely different.and if you think it is slow now it will have less power .

All my "toys" are manual transmissions and I am tired of driving into downtown rush hour traffic every morning with the 5-speed. I am not overly concerned with the power loss........yet. I will check the gears.

My guess would be, that by the time you pay for all the parts, get the old trans out, put the new one in, the try to get it to work with a truck that is not wired for auto.. You may just save yourself a lot of time and heartache be just selling what you have and buying one that is already setup with an automatic....

I will take on a lot of crazy tasks, but converting a computer controlled truck to an automatic is not one of them...

I agree. Not worth it. Wiring issues. Radiator or after market cooler. Pedal assembly. Etc etc

Dont forget trans crossmember and rear d-shaft from an automatic exc truck ( 4runner shaft is too short).

Then you need to figure out how to control the transmission (its own ECU etc. etc.)

I think youd be better off selling your truck and looking for an auto.

There is a loooooog list of things that need to be changed.

Okay,okay. No Mas. I obviously did not think this through completely. Hence all the constructive points that have been brought up. I am leaving it a manual transmission. I will continue to look for another truck with an automatic transmission. I just really like the 89-95 style trucks and they are hard to find in decent shape around here. Thanks for all the info.

Ever thought of picking up a Corolla or something to commute in? My wife had a 2000 Corolla when we got married... that thing was a tin can going down the freeway but it was an auto and you could go 90mph all day long with the AC going and it still got 35mpg. It was small and easy to park around town. You can find reliable ones for a couple thousand bucks. We took it to Reno one time though and it was pretty painful going over Donner Pass. We traded it off and I got her an 02 Camry. She drives the wheels of it and have never had to do anything to it.

This exact swap was written up here on Yotatech within the last six months. Do a search. If you have a donor car, it's not too tough. It's pretty likely that you could find another YotaTech member in your area who wants to do the opposite swap.

I still can't see why anyone would want to do a manual->auto swap, except in special cases like that recent writeup, where the guy had injuries from an accident.
