Fuel Sender Unit Discontinued - 87 4runner
Got a 87 4runner SR5 22rte. Does anyone know where you can find a fuel level sender for these 1st gen Toyotas?
I'm in need of P/N 83320-39735. It is the 3-wire unit. The dealer says they can't get it anymore since it's been discontinued. The part is also not available in the aftermarket either. I tried going online to check the used auto parts market websites, and have checked ebay from time to time but no luck. I occasionally check the scrap yards around me (in Michigan) but it is pretty rare to find one of these old 4runners in them. The scrap yards around here also don't inventory their stock, so I actually have to go searching through the entire yard each time. Once I did get lucky and found a scrapped 1st gen 4runner in the yard. I pulled the tank out but the sender was in the same condition having broken wire contacts.
Does anyone know if you can swap out a 2nd gen pick-up/4runner fuel level sender into the first gen? It looks like it would fit, but I don't know if the resistance readings would be the same for it to work.
It kind of sucks driving around with no fuel gauge and I would really like to get it fixed.

RET is the turbo correct?.... you have the digital gauge cluster? Analog and Digital will have different senders, a different signal is sent for each type.
If so, this guy is selling the head on ebay. Send him a message for the fuel sending unit. It appears by the photos that he has the entire 4runner still so he's likely to still have it.

I'm having a similar problem with my 2nd Gen Camry. Have the digital cluster but no matching rheostat or fuel sending unit. I currently have rheostats from digital gauge cressidas and a supra which I know will work, but the fuel sending unit is a different story. I have the units from the cressidas that I'm going to have to mod to work in the camry. For some reason the guys on ebay who are pulling these digital gauges to sell aren't aware that the rheostats and fuel sending units are just as important/valuable.

Thanks Terrys87. I'll try sending some requests out to them and try the wanted section after I get some more posts.
Grego92 - That's correct it is the turbo 4runner with the digital dash. Thanks for the link. I sent the user an email but he sent back saying he doesn't own a turbo 4runner. Don't know why he has the complete vehicle pictures on there...
Maybe this weekend I'll see if I can locate a sender from a 2nd gen pickup/4runner at the scrap yard and just give it a try.
I found this thread on the subject. Looks like I'm not the only one.

It appears that one user was able to make a sender work out of a 92.

If you really need a fuel sending unit I have seen them different places .
You can go the complete set up with new gauge or find one that matches the signal that fuel gauge needs..i researched it when deciding what to do with mine.
I have a 87 that the gauge quit been like that a few years I just fill up every 120 miles give or take.
I might have a new sending unit I am not sure if it is the correct part number you need. Now Finding it that would be a major adventure.

I put an 87 Fuel sender in my 85. We took it from a gas tank a guy was selling. The newer one had a low fuel sensor so we just left it unhooked. The 87 had a shorter arm that held the plastic piece. It works but it doesn't go down as much(more gas on Empty)

I have a 22rte Turbo 4runner digital dash. Same problem. I bought the sending unit that was available at the dealership (the turbo fuel gauge sending unit is discontinued) for the 22RE and no difference after a couple fill-ups. At this point, I'm going to attempt to repair the old sending unit that had a stuck arm when I removed it and return the 22RE sending unit as I have not found a new or used part anywhere for our 22RE turbos. If you figure this one out, post it up!
