86 DLX Fuel Gauge Issue
Quick question... This is more to correct an annoyance than a serious issue. My fuel gauge is jacked up. I've got a 1986 DLX 4x4 22r. When the tank is completely full, the gauge reads just over 1/2. Before I drop the tank to check the float, I want to get some input from guys who know. Is the likely culprit the float, or can I adjust the gauge to read correctly?
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!

it's the float/sender not repairable. Typical problem with these and its about a $90 part from the dealership and/or online OEM parts supplier.

They can be repaired but it is enough to drive you nuts and takes far longer then it takes to earn enough for a new one.
What you have is a wiper riding along a resistor that is attached to the float as the resistance changes the needle moves.
The resistor opens the wiper breaks till you get the old one out you have enough time in all ready easier to buy a new one.
Trying to rewrap the resistor with new wire takes forever to get it till it reads close to factory .
Having done one never again but it did work . If I charged normal rates I would have had to bill around $450.00 to repair the sending unit

or ones that don't know how to run a vin number correctly. Or ones that have no clue how to use their parts directory. I can't count how many times on here, I have put up parts numbers and yet stupid dealerships won't hire my butt because I have no parts counter experience. sheesh.

I fixed my fuel gauge problem yesterday.
it would read above 1/2 tank and anything below 1/2 tank would read empty.
I pulled out a unit from a 1992 pu and put it in my 86/7
now I can read 1/2 tank, 1/4 tank, ect...
the best part is, people are trying to sell this float sender unit for $100 or $150 on ebay, $90 from the dealership
I got mine for $14 at the junk yard. works like a champ.

I've found that many of these Toyota parts guys really don't know how to use their own system. They don't look in the right place. Fuel gauge assemblies are found under section 84-01 Switch and Relay and the assembly is usually listed on the last page of that section. You said that your truck is a 86 22R dlx model, I found three different part #'s for that truck. I have an 86 Pickup 22-re SR5 w low fuel light and I recently put in a new gauge assembly for a 19 gallon tank. I got a substituted part # (83320-39695) it worked but I had to redrill the hole orientation and the wiper arm was a bit shorter, it was probably for a 17 gallon tank.
I did a search on http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/
, then I plugged in the 3's at Champion Toyota World in Houston
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=213747(I deal with them a lot). Here is what I came up with:-
Part Number: 8332039465 List Price Core Price Your Price
Electrical - Chassis electrical - Senders - Fuel gauge sending unit Fuel gauge sending unit, pick-up, 2wd, gas engines, long bed 1984 - 1985

Electrical - Chassis electrical - Senders - Fuel gauge sending unit Fuel gauge sending unit, pick-up, 4wd, w/turbo, 65 liter 1986 - 1988
$89.34 $0.00 $67.00
The first 3 are for an 86 pickup, the last 2 are the sending uinits for my 86 4Runner 22-rte, sr5 model with a digital dash (I ran the Vin#).The page doesn't copy exactly right; the first # is the list price, the second is the core charge and the third is what the part will cost you.
If you want to find the correct one for your truck go to Toydiy.com and type in your Vin #.

Hadmatt54, you put up the 2wd not the 4wd tanks.

is it as simple as pulling the hatch under the rear seat and just swapping out the unit? I'm tired of mine going from FULL at fill up to EMPTY after 70 miles... keeping track of mileage is ok, but it'd be nice to have a general idea of how much is in the tank

its a very easy task, just wait until you know fuel is low remove the shield and remove the drain plug ,i then remove the 6 bolts of the tank after removing the hoses and 2 connectors, without fuel the tank is very light,i just use my arms and knees to install the tank.
