exhaust performance

My question is in regards to whether or not a larger bore cat-back exhaust with a high flow catalytic convertor will get you as much gain as you think... you see I recently opened up the intake a little with a K&N FIPK and I noticed a small difference (probably mostly in sound). It seems like if you were to do the cat-back, you might as well slap on a header. I have a 94 22re and I needs mo' powa! Thanks all.
