Engine Rattle? Video

What does this sound like to you? Seems to go away when throttle is pressed. Could this be a vacuum or exhaust leak? Timing chain is newer and looked good the other day when i checked it. Thanks. Sorry for the pictures.

sounds like normal 22re valve train/injector tick to me. Your motor sounds pretty good actually for a 22re in my opinion

its a 22r, there are no injectors.
thats how my old 22r sounded, i think its just valve noise, you could adjust your valves and it might quiet down a bit.

i haven't heard one like that unless something was wrong inside...

valve cover too tight, valve adjustment needed, wrist pin worn... etc

sounds like it's up top from the video.

for comparison, my 22r w 184,000 miles, cycling AC:

there is a link for HD video at that, better sound anyway.

Look, it's an old rig and NEW to you. YES, po the cover and check valve lash and it's kinda hard to arm chair quarterback from here with a video but snug the exhaust manifold to 35 ft lb. with a torque wrench because it sounds like a combo of valves and exhaust leak tick to me.

BOTH OF THESE ARE FREE- except for your time.

BTW- the mechanical fuel pumps rattle on these as well.... even the NEW ones. so don't get excited by that.

Rule those out and then take care of that pulley bearing on the tensioner

HOW? take belts of, spin tensioner puley and listen for sound that isn't smooth. If it's SMOOTH- leave it.

Maybe I'm "high" but it looks like your driver's side chain guide is broken at the top part, and the chain is wearing into your head from those pics you posted.....

Really? I thought that the drivers side guide was taller than the passenger side one? Do you not see those marks on the side of the head

Yeah I see them.... thats when the old guides broke and rubbed for a bit. the ones on there now look normal to me. The chain wouldn't be able to make those marks where they are with the guide s he has now.

He might have lost a little piece but look at pic #1- theres no way his chain is gonna go there...

Didn't see that you adusted the valves already.... Take a hard look at exhaust leak next. DO NOT over-torque the nuts! Just to 35 ft. pounds then STOP... might need a new gasket and use some copper high temp sealant when you re-install.

After install, warm up ad re-torque ONCE. Then see how it rolls.

Yeah, probably an exhaust leak. I just recently replaced a head gasket and the two rear exhaust bolts were stripped and not torquing properly i fixed it but i think the gasket was already messed up at that point. Thanks for the input guys! Ill get around to fixing it in a week or two.

I still need to re do the exhaust gaskets but I can not feel a leak anywhere. Re checked the valves again and they were all spot on. I also made sure the valve cover was not overtightened and while this helped a little I dont think it affected the particular noise I am trying to fix. Local stores want a ton of money for the exhaust gaskets.

I already forgot but does my year of truck have the circle exhaust ports or pear shaped?

Sounds normal to me. But you can check the valve cover and make sure its not to tight, if your worried about it. Just turn the radio up and drive it.
