electric fan install
hey guys,
i got a electric fan from one of my buddies dads who races toyotas and its going in my truck tomorrow. Just need to know what all is involved and what to expect when doing it. do yall think its best to wire it direct to the ignition so it runs all the time, or connect it to a rheostat<sp?>

i just did mine i used a flex a lite VARIBLE SPEED CONTROLER its about 100 bucks but heres the best part it starts up at 60% power so no big start up load. start up load can be up to 80amps without something like this. the fan control has atemp prob. this is a very easy mod and a very easy controler everything is labeled. a 5 year old could do this wiring!

Variable speed controller on one speed and on/off switch for the other so you have dual control.
And don't mount it to the radiator with those zip tie things...I just pulled off an electric fan from an 87 I bought a couple weeks ago and the electric fan ruined the radiator bouncing around on the fins...ruined it.
Personally, I think in most cases, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...but on my buggy I will have an electric fan but not mounted on the radiator.

I hate to say it, but I agree with waskillywabbit, I would avoid the electric fan unless your current one is dead.
But if you must, have it turn on with the ignition... nothing worse than forgetting to turn it on one day, and end up on the side of the road with an over heated engine.

I still say 3 position switch, assuming you have a thermo on feature. When going prolonged slow speeds the powersteering gets hot. Unlike the motor cooling that uses a thermostat the powersteering is always needing air draw to cool fluid. the condition for always on for me were trails that require slow speeds with a lot of turns.
