does 22r head = 22re head

Have 1990 s/b truck with 22re. timing chain seems to have slipped a tooth, i.e. bent valves. I have a 22r head. Is it the same as the 22re?
Thanks eh, Me

They are the same for your truck. I think '84 and older 22R heads are different.

They did change something on the EFI in '89 - 95 ... Dont know what exactly but i dont think it was the heads, someone clarify?

22r head isn't necessarily the same as a 22RE head.
Do you know the year of the 22r head?

22re and R heads are NOT all the same. On older motors like the 22r you need to use the celica efi manifold. Watch the stud pattern on the manifolds to make sure it will work. If you do the swap of the heads and need that celica manifold i have one. I also have 2 22r heads a 22re head and a built 20r head.

85-95 22r and 22re heads ARE the same. 84 and back is a different story.

Ummm no. The 22RE head doesn't have the hole for the mechanical fuel pump. The boss is there but you would have to hog it out with a dremel or something.

wrong! ALL 22R and 22RE heads have a cutout for the fuel pump. the only heads that didn't were '78 and older 20R heads.

for the sake of a swap, 85-95 are the same. a 22RE is a 22R with fuel injection, a lot of guys forget that. the only place it would come into play is if you were looking for an early style head, the 22RE didn't appear until 1983, so if you picked up an '81 or '82 head it wouldn't have the bosses for the EFI manifold.

Really? I swear my 93 2wd doesn't have a block off plate. I will have to look. I could be wrong.

I'am wrong:pat: I just looked and it has a block off plate. I was thinking of the 3RZ-FE motor in my mothers 03 Tacoma that I was working on the other day. It had a boss for the earlier distributors and that is what was in my head. My bad.

Something FYI, Watch out for the bolt in the front of the head under the distributor gear, a pool of oil covered mine (I didn't know it was there). When I loosened the head the t-chain cover broke. #$%$%#% A bunch of thanks for all your input folks!!! Yep, the t-chain did jump. At 150k miles not unheard of. There was also alot of carbonization around the starboard side head bolt behind #3 and the bolt hole. I had been loosing coolant very slowly lately, none in the crankcase. Guess we know where it was going now, eh. Since the rig has so many miles on it. I've decided to pull the block and have it built too. Appreciate all the discussion. Me

Agreed, 1985 and newer 22R heads are the same as 22RE's. The '84 and older 22R heads have a different shape exhaust ports and slightly different mounting holes for the exhaust manifold. I believe the only "difference" in the head is the cam shaft. I have used 22R heads on 22RE's, and vice versa (including camshafts, and it has always worked. Don't forget to get new headbolts. You can technically reuse them, it's not worth it especially if you were already suspecting headgasket issues.
