difference 91 3.0 and a 95 3.0

I was told there is a difference between these two. I have a 95 3.0 long block I want to put in a 91 4 runner. If i use all the part off the 91 will it work. Any help is welcome

If any thing its not going to be the engine its self but the injecters and other plugs to the harness. Just did a 3.0 swap on my buddies 4 runner and we ended up having to splice all the cab to ECU plugs to so the cab harness worked. If any thing I belive in 95.5 is when they started with the 3.4 as well. Either switch out ALL the sensors on the engine so your harness will fit them or swap out the whole cab harness. If you got the go-nads then cut n splice but thats risky business right there.

Theres no difference to the motor itself except the timing belt assembly... ( its hard to explain. The belts are the same, but the assembly to take it on/off is different ) Other than that, they're exactly the same. the only difference is what is under the hood... cruise control, fuse boxes, abs / non abs. stuff like that.

I just discovered this... I have a 90 and mine didn't ad up when looking at manuals. The earlier years have the no.1 idler pulley with a spring as the tensioner and the newer ones have a tensioner built into the fan bracket.

Also the "No.2 Idler Pulley" where the water outlet is attached mine is different than other manuals I've seen, I have a bypass hose.. would this present problems for coolant lines if you were changing things?

There is also a difference in the distributors among the various 3.0 engines. There are two variants, and I think 88-91 and 92-95 define them. Different harnesses, and different shafts. One is interchangeable with the other in one direction, but not the other.

The early distributor has a pilot shaft on the end of the drive gear that goes into a machined hole in the head. The later ones do not have this so the hole in the head is not finished.

About the only option is to cut the end of the shaft off a early distributor if you want to put it in a later head.

The earlier one also has a pigtail with a connector coming out of it, vs. the newer one has a connector on it.

To make a universal application, some shops have successfully machined the pilot holes to 10mm to fit later applications. This can be done without any problems if used on an earlier application with the smaller piloted distributor. The left and right camshafts did not change throughout the life span of the motor.

I'm not too sure about that information on the pilot holes. I only see one part number for the distributor from Toyota and the aftermarket for 89-91. Its also odd that they didn't mention the 92+ that has no pilot shaft.
